Pastor John Gray is the founder of Relentless Church in South Carolina. 

He became a popular fixture in the church scene while serving as a pastor under Joel Osteen at his Lakewood Church.

Biography

He was born on 26th June 1973 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

There is not much known about Gray’s childhood, except that he was sexually abused at some point.

“Sexual abuse happened to me,” he said. “I’m not gonna let that moment define my future.”

Early in his career, John worked as a Christian comedian and singer. He was a backup singer for gospel singer Kirk Franklin.

Gray trained under televangelist Joel Olsteen and served as an associate pastor in Houston, Texas.

In 2018, Gray founded Relentless Church after pastor Ron Carpenter announced he would move Redemption Church to San Jose, California.

After three months, Gray said he had 5,000 to 6,000 attendees.

In early 2019, Relentless Church had about 15,000 members.

Meeting With Pres. Trump

In 2018, he faced harsh criticism for meeting President Donald Trump at the White House. At the time, President Trump invited several pastors to the White House.

Pastor Gray said he had not visited the president to show support but to push for the prison reforms.

“I did not go as a politician,” Gray said. “I went as a man of God, and I wanted to be heard.”

Pastor John Gray told Don Lemon on CNN: “I was there for people who could not fight for themselves.” 

Reality Series

He had his own reality TV series titled The Book of John Gray.

It was aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network for three seasons.

Sued For Thousands In Allegedly Unpaid Wages

In January 2020, Travis Hayes, a former chief financial officer at Relentless Church, sued Gray and The Greenville megachurch.

Travis spent two decades as the CFO for Ron Carpenter’s Redemption Church. Hayes claimed in his lawsuit that Relentless Church has refused to pay him more than $75K.

Later that month, Pastor Gray filed a counterclaim in which he details how Hayes had an excessive compensation package structure.

Another Legal Dispute

In October 2020, Redemption Church and Relentless Church reached a settlement in a property fight.

Initially, Redemption Church sought to have Relentless Church evicted from its Haywood Road property.

According to the settlement, the two parties reached an agreement, and Carpenter would receive a $6.25 million retirement payout.

In early 2021, Relentless Church and Gray accused Redemption Church of not following the terms of a settlement.

In April 2021, Relentless Church secured a space for a new campus near Atlanta, Georgia.

“We’re going to create an atmosphere where everyone knows they belong,” he said.

In June 2021, Relentless Church was sued by Kevin Johnston over the sale of a 7,000-square-foot house in Simpsonville, where Gray and his family lived.

The problem was the home was sold at $1.8 million home, and the sale agreement also included the furniture.

Hospitalized With Pulmonary Embolism

On July 7, 2022, he was admitted into Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama, with a saddle pulmonary embolism. The condition can lead to sudden hemodynamic collapse and death. 

His wife, Aventer Gray, said that the family was “in need of a miracle.”

Gray was later transferred to Northside Hospital in Gwinnett, Georgia.

On July 20, he was released from the hospital.

“It was GOD ALONE that turned the tide of this battle,” he wrote shortly after his release from the hospital. “I love you with all I have – and with all I have left.”

Wife

Pastor John Gray is married to Aventer Gray. His wife worked as the dance choreographer at Lakewood Church.

Aventer is the Founder & President of the Reign Dance Company and serves as a co-pastor at Relentless Church.

In 2017, Gray and his wife appeared on their reality show “The Book of John Gray.”

In 2019, Pastor Gray bought his wife a $200K Lamborghini as an eighth wedding anniversary gift. He later said the car was bought with “not a nickel, not a penny,” from his church.

“This is a husband blessing his wife,” John detailed.

In the past, he was caught in an alleged cheating scandal.
