Mark & Jacob Iskander
On September 29, 2020, Rebecca Grossman was driving her Mercedes AMG GLE 43 at 81mph—according to her vehicle’s state of the art onboard computer—when it allegedly hit brothers Mark and Jacob Iskander.
Mark was 11, and Jacob was 9.
They had been walking with their family—parents Nancy and Karim, younger brother Zachary, and baby sister Violet—when Rebecca’s and another person’s vehicles approached the marked crosswalk.
Rebecca’s car struck the two boys—Mark died at the scene and Jacob died in hospital several hours later.
Grossman did not stop her vehicle at the scene, but continued driving until the Mercedes’ disabled its motor.
This safety feature is designed to kick in whenever the vehicle deploys an airbag—which it had done. Grossman tried to start the ignition of her car 14 times after stopping.
Grossman claimed she did not know what she hit, and did not go back to the scene of the crime.
She stayed in her car.
Grossman was arraigned on December 30, 2020, and charged with two counts of murder in the second degree and two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence—with a potential charge of hit-and-run resulting in death still being considered in 2022.
The disgraced businesswoman pled not guilty to murder charges.
Over the next 16 months, Grossman would miss five court dates, prompting the judge to apologize to the traumatized Iskander family for the “torture and heartbreak” being inflicted on them still.
Grossman changed attorneys in December of 2021, and in April of 2022, her Preliminary Hearing began.
Her attorneys implied potential police misconduct (none was found) and attempted to have the press and the public banned from the hearing (the request was denied).
Grossman still lives at home on a $2 million bond, despite the deaths of the two boys.
The trial is ongoing in 2022.
Update – in February 2024, a jury found Grossman guilty of murder in the killing of two young brothers. She faces 34 years to life in prison. In June 2024, a judge sentenced Rebecca Grossman to 15 years to life in prison.
