Rob made his directing debut on the Roger Rabbit short Tummy Trouble (1989).

His first big break was directing The Lion King in 1994. He was the director alongside Roger Allers. The Lion King grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide and received two Academy Awards. The cast included Matthew Broderick, Whoopi Goldberg, and James Earl Jones.

In 1999, Rob directed Stuart Little, an animated comedy film that grossed $300 million worldwide. It is based on a novel by E. B. White. Michael J. Fox was the voice of the main character, Stuart Little–an anthropomorphic mouse who was born to human parents.

The comedy was followed by a sequel, Stuart Little 2, in 2002, also directed by Minkoff.

“I think it was more fun the second time round,” Rob said in an interview for BBC. “We had a much better idea of how things would pan out.”

It was followed by Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild in 2005, but Minkoff was not involved in the project.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

In 2014, Minkoff directed Mr. Peabody & Sherman. The film grossed over $275 million worldwide. It earned $8 million on its opening day.

“When I was a kid, I watched Mr. Peabody and Sherman as part of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, and I loved them as characters, and so for years I remember them until about 10 years ago, and it was suggested that maybe I’d be interested in directing a film featuring these characters and I jumped at the chance,” Minkoff said in an interview with AP.

Paws of Fury

In July 2022, Rob produced Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.

It is loosely based on Mel Brooks’ 1974 film Blazing Saddles. The voices of Samuel L. Jackson, Gabriel Iglesias, and Mel Brooks can be heard in the animated comedy film.

“It’s about a character who’s a dog, but he’s got to fit into a world of cats which cannot be easy if you’re a dog,” Rob explained to Nancy Tapia on July 15, 2022. He added: “Well, I think we’re kind of breaking the mold though because I think well, my experience with cats and dogs, they love each other except cats rule. That’s true.”

“Watching you direct this movie was both inspiring and powerful,” his wife said.

In 2022, Minkoff was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in Directing award at the Las Cruces International Film Festival.
