She was born on April 15, 1961, in Medford, Massachusetts, US, as Sarah Bloom.

In 1979, Bloom graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, Illinois.

In 1983, Raskin earned a B.A. in economics from Amherst College.

In 1986, she received a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

From 2007-2010, she served as Commissioner of Financial Regulation for the State of Maryland.

From 2010 to 2014, Ms. Raskin served as a governor of the central bank. President Barack Obama nominated her. The Senate voted for her unanimously in 2010.

“Banking system is only one piece of the entire financial sector, and I think that there are mechanisms in place that Dodd-Frank has set up, for example, through the Financial Stability Oversight Council through various other collaborative mechanisms to help monitor and address those risks and you also see the regulator’s coming out with more rules regarding short-term wholesale funding and risks that are developing outside the traditional banking system, but I think we have to admit that they that they are there and that there is at the same time an attempt to try to mitigate what those effects might be,” Raskin said in an interview with Gillian Tett of the Financial Times.

From 2017 to 2019, Bloom served on the board of Reserve Trust, a fintech in Colorado. 

Nomination to a key Fed role

In January 2022, it was reported that President Joe Biden nominated Sarah to be the Federal Reserve’s next vice chair for supervision. Raskin has been nominated alongside Philip N. Jefferson and Lisa D. Cook.

“Raskin is among the most qualified nominees ever for the position of Vice Chair for Supervision,” President Joe Biden said.

Sen. Sherrod Brown said that Raskin is one of the “most qualified people ever nominated for the Federal Reserve.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that Bloom “is one of the most qualified individuals to ever be nominated to this position.”

In March 2022, Raskin withdrew her nomination for vice chairman of the Federal Reserve. She blamed “relentless attacks by special interests” for her decision. She also wrote in a letter – “I am not concerned with attacks on my character.”

Biden stated that he looks forward to “her future contributions to our country.” 

Husband

Sarah Bloom Raskin is married to Jamie Raskin, a professor of constitutional law at American University and the U.S. Representative for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District. He also authored several books.

They have two daughters, Hannah and Tabitha.

Their late son, Tommy, took his own life after a long battle with depression. He was a student at Harvard Law School.
