Derek David Verrett, also known as Shaman Durek, was born in Sacramento, California, on November 17, 1974, and raised in Foster City, California.
Verrett said that he was a sixth-generation shaman and had known this from the age of two.
Shaman Durek stated that his mother is a Norwegian-West Indian and that his father was originally from Haiti.
In 2014, he officially changed his name to Durek Verrett.

Shaman Durek stated during a podcast episode in 2019 that he had once been imprisoned at the age of sixteen.
He stated that since his father would not have allowed him to throw a party at their home, he decided to host a house party in a nearby abandoned house.
Durek claimed that there were older teenagers present who wrote their names on the floor in alcohol and lit it on fire.
The fire became too large for the teens to contain, and the entire home was engulfed in flames.
Since Durek was the organizer of the party, he was held responsible for the damages and served a year in prison.
He stated that it was a difficult and traumatizing time in his life, but it taught him to appreciate his freedom.

In 2019, Durek’s book, Spirit Hacking, was supposed to be published in Norway.
Upon further inspection of the content, the publisher decided against publishing his novel.
In his book, Durek advocated for several medical theories which apparently weren’t grounded in any facts.
Despite the controversial content of his novel, a small publisher decided to publish Durek’s book with only a few minor changes.
Wife
Shaman Durek’s first wife was Zaneta Marzalkova.
She lived in Los Angeles but was a Czech native.
The couple got married in 2005, but by 2008, however, Durek claimed that she had exploited him, and he reported her to immigration as an illegal alien.
Marzalkova was jailed and eventually deported from the United States.
Their divorce was finalized in 2009.
Durek was also in a relationship with a man named Hank Greenberg. Greenberg was a masseur and Durek’s business partner at the time.
In 2014, while the couple was planning their wedding, they broke off their engagement.
Greenberg has since claimed that Durek was manipulative and violent during their relationship. He also accused Durek of being a cult leader.
Tiana Griego served as Durek’s manager and lived with him for six years.

Durek and Princess Märtha Louise of Norway have been in a relationship since 2019 and are engaged to be married.
In the early stages of their relationship, the couple was met with a lot of negativity and criticism.
Several Norwegian civilians and media houses voiced their disapproval of Durek and claimed that he was a con artist and conspiracy theorist.
Durek and Märtha Louise organized seminars titled, “The Princess and the Shaman,” which were also heavily criticized by the Norwegian public. The people of Norway feared that he might be using her position as Princess for business and/or political gain.
Durek has claimed that he believes racism to be the only reason he has been received so poorly by the people of Norway.
He stated that he would be the first black person to become a member of a European royal family, and the Norwegians wanted to put a stop to it. These claims have also been met with criticism.
In June 2022, despite the backlash they had received throughout their relationship, Princess Märtha Louise announced her engagement to Shaman Durek.

Durek claimed that the progression of his relationship with Princess Märtha Louise did not come as a surprise to him since his mother had predicted he would marry a Norwegian princess when he was a child.
In November 2022, Princess Märtha Louise officially relinquished her royal duties to focus on developing her alternative medicine business with her fiancé.
Reborn
Verrett is said to have suffered from a serious kidney disease that led to kidney failure.
His ex-boyfriend, Hank Greenberg, created a fundraising campaign to help with his medical bills.
Eventually, his sister, Angelina, donated one of her kidneys to him in 2012.
After his kidney transplant, Shaman Durek was placed in a medically induced coma for several months.
When he awoke, it took a year before Shaman Durek was capable of walking on his own again.
It’s said that during this time, his heart had stopped beating, and he was not expected to survive, but he did.
As a result of this experience, Shaman Durek claims that he had died and had been reborn.
Second Kidney Failure

In January 2022, Verrett was once again in need of a new kidney.
After his sister donated her kidney to save her brother’s life, Durek had hoped that this could lead to him living a normal life. However, ten years later, due to his incurable kidney disease, his condition had once again deteriorated.
Durek had to report to a dialysis center for treatment three to five times a week.
His fiancée, Princess Märtha Louise, immediately volunteered to be his organ donor, however, after several tests, it was concluded that she was not a viable donor.
