Anthony Anderson is an American actor best known for his many roles on TV, including his role as Andre Johnson on Black-ish.
He was born on August 15, 1970, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
His mother, Dora, was a movie extra, while his father, Sterling Bowman, owned women’s clothing stores.
”It was a clothing store for plus-size women,” Anderson told Elle. ”I learned never to say, ‘That’s too tight.’ If she puts it on and feels good about herself, then it’s for her.”
He grew up in Los Angeles.
”My beaches growing up were Hermosa and Manhattan Beach,” Anthony confessed for Visit California. He added: ”I remember getting on the bus, skipping school with a bunch of kids, and riding out to the beach.”
He discovered his passion for acting via his mother.
”I wanted to be a lawyer and eventually a judge; and also an actor,” Anderson said in an interview with LA Times in March 2019. ”At age 9, I realized if I became an actor, I could be all three of those things.”
In 1988, Anderson graduated from Hollywood High School Performing Arts Center.
He went to Howard University but dropped out. Anthony later said about his decision to drop out of college: ”I was paying for college myself, and I ran out of money after my Junior year.”
One of his first roles was in the comedy series The Wayans Bros. in 1995.
From 1996 to 1997, Anthony portrayed Teddy Broadis in 39 episodes of the TV series ”Hang Time.”
In 2000, he made a guest appearance as Matthew Vault in Ally McBeal. Also in 2000, Anderson appeared in 3 Strikes, Big Momma’s House, Me, Myself & Irene, Homewood P.I., and Urban Legends: Final Cut.
In 2006, Anthony played Mahalik in Scary Movie 4. The film was directed by David Zucker. His other credits in 2006 include – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Last Stand, and The Departed.
In 2007, Anderson portrayed Glen Whitmann in the blockbuster Transformers. In the same year, he was named ambassador for the American Black Film Festival.
In 2008, he appeared in Samantha Who?, a TV sitcom that aired on ABC.
In 2009, Anthony made his directorial debut with a short film featuring Jeremy Sisto.
From 2012 to 2013, Anderson starred in 18 episodes of the series Guys with Kids.
Starting in 2014, Anderson performs in the TV series Black-ish as Andre “Dre” Johnson, a family man who raises his kids in a predominantly white neighborhood and worries that his children are not aware enough of their heritage.
The show was written and created by Kenya Barris.
Anderson now has six Emmy nominations in a row for his performance on Black-ish. ”I wish they’d loved me a little more, Kevin, to give me a win and not just the nomination,” he told Gold Derby.

On September 11, 1999, Anthony Anderson married Alvina Anderson.
The two are high school sweethearts.
In 2015, Alvina filed for divorce from Anderson, citing irreconcilable differences.
In September 2017, Anthony and Alvina canceled their divorce proceedings.
The couple has two children, Kyra Anderson and Nathan Anderson.
Nathan is an actor known for his roles in All About the Washingtons, Black-ish, and Richie Rich.
”When he was 8, he told me he wanted to act, and I support him,” Anthony explained in an interview. He went on to say: ”I explained to him that he won’t get every job and to be prepared for rejection.”
