His father is a retired Ford engineer, while his mother was the first female engineer hired by Ford Motor Co.

In 2010, Sanjay and the team completed the Nautica New York City Triathlon. ”I’d been moderately athletic in my life but never thought I’d be doing something like a triathlon,” Dr. Gupta said in an interview with Triathlete. He added: ”I hadn’t swum as an adult. What I realized is that besides offering an incredible sense of accomplishment, psychologically it was very empowering.”

In 2011, he reported from the tsunami-ravaged Japan. In the same year, Sanjay portrayed himself in the movie Contagion, alongside Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Matt Damon, and Marion Cotillard.

In March 2012, he published a book titled – ”Monday Mornings.” It follows the lives of five surgeons at Chelsea General. The book was adapted as a medical drama television series that ran on TNT in 2013.
