He was born on October 23, 1969, in Novi, Michigan, USA.

His parents, Subhash and Damyanti Gupta, moved to the US in the 1960s.

His father is a retired Ford engineer, while his mother was the first female engineer hired by Ford Motor Co.

In 1988, Sanjay graduated from Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.

In 1993, Gupta received his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.

In 1997, he received a White House Fellowship.

In 2000, Sanjay completed his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Michigan Health System.


In the summer of 2001, Sanjay joined CNN as a medical correspondent.

In 2003, Dr. Gupta traveled to Iraq and performed emergency surgery on Iraqi civilians and US soldiers.

”First time I ever operated on the brain, you know, close to 30 years ago now, it was a mystical experience,” he told CBS News in January 2021. He added: ”You can’t believe that those three-and-a-half pounds are everything to us — all of our pain, all of our joy, all of our memories, all of our learning, everything.”

In 2003, Sanjay was named one of People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive.”

In 2004, Dr. Gupta was named “Journalist of the Year” by the Atlanta Press Club.

In 2010, Sanjay and the team completed the Nautica New York City Triathlon. ”I’d been moderately athletic in my life but never thought I’d be doing something like a triathlon,” Dr. Gupta said in an interview with Triathlete. He added: ”I hadn’t swum as an adult. What I realized is that besides offering an incredible sense of accomplishment, psychologically it was very empowering.”

In 2011, he reported from the tsunami-ravaged Japan. In the same year, Sanjay portrayed himself in the movie Contagion, alongside Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Matt Damon, and Marion Cotillard.

In March 2012, he published a book titled – ”Monday Mornings.” It follows the lives of five surgeons at Chelsea General. The book was adapted as a medical drama television series that ran on TNT in 2013.

In April 2012, Sanjay was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

From 2013 to 2014, Gupta served as the host of the medical-centric news program ”Sanjay Gupta MD” on CNN.

Chasing Life

In 2019, Dr. Gupta appeared in Chasing Life, a six-part docuseries that takes Sanjay to Turkey, Italy, Norway, Bolivia, India, and Japan.

On May 15, 2004, Dr. Sanjay Gupta married Rebecca Olson, an attorney specializing in family and divorce law.

The two first met in Ann Arbor when Rebecca was doing her undergraduate studies at U-M in biology and political science.
