What is Canelo Álvarez’s net worth? Who is Canelo Álvarez’s wife?
Introduction
Canelo Álvarez (real name: Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán) is a Mexican boxer.
He is best known for his multiple title wins across four weight classes, as well as his becoming undisputed champion in the super-middleweight class (meaning that he has held all titles in that class simultaneously).
His record at the time of writing was 62-2-2.
The Origin Story
Álvarez was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, on July 18th, 1990, as Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán.
His family does not originally hail from Guadalajara, but instead comes from Los Reyes, Michoacán.
Álvarez is the youngest of eight children, and has six brothers and a sister. All of his brothers are also professional boxers.
Canelo grew up on a farm, where he enjoyed an extremely physical lifestyle.
Among the activities he engaged in was horse riding – something he still has a passion for today.
As a child, he was not particularly interested in school studies, and followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Rigoberto, in developing a passion for boxing. “I didn’t study, I come from very modest beginnings,” he said in an interview.
Álvarez’s nickname of “Canelo” – the masculine noun for “cinnamon” in Spanish – is one commonly given to boys with red hair.
In Mexico, such boys are often presumed to have Irish heritage, particularly from the Saint Patrick’s Battalion that fought in the US-Mexican War.
Álvarez was also nicknamed “jicama con chile” as a child, meaning “jicama with chili” – a popular Mexican snack.
Boxing Career
Álvarez made his debut as an amateur boxer at the age of 13; he was inspired to do so after he saw Rigoberto in the ring.
Rigoberto acted as his coach for a time while Álvarez boxed at the amateur level; he later handed him off to a professional coach when he realized the potential that he had.
In 2004, Canelo took home the silver medal in the Junior Mexican National Championships.
The following year, he became the Junior Mexican National Champion, establishing himself as a formidable boxer. He finished his amateur career with a record of 44-0-2 with 12 wins by knockout.
Rigoberto handed over the management of his younger brother to the father-son team Chepo and Eddy Reynoso.
They were unable to find appropriate opponents for him at the amateur level, so they took him professionally.
Álvarez stunned pundits with his meteoric rise to dominance.
In the first 18 months of his career, he knocked out 11 of his 13 recorded opponents; Chepo Reynoso, however, alleges that there were a further 10 wins by knockout, but that the venues were small, and it was too troublesome to have the fights added to Álvarez’s record.
In 2006, Álvarez and his six brothers made history when all seven of them fought on the same night, with four brothers winning their bouts and three losing.
Álvarez himself, however, continued to go from strength to strength.
He appeared in several high-profile matches over the next fifteen years, facing off against the likes of Kermit Cintrón, Floyd Mayweather (losing on decision against him), Julio César Chávez Jr., Gennady Golovkin, and John Ryder.
Over the course of his career, he has amassed a great many titles, including the Ring magazine, WBC and WBA (Super) belts, as well as the IBF and WBO titles.
He is the first and only boxer in history to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion.
In September 2024, he won vs Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Wife
Canelo Álvarez was previously engaged to the actress and beauty pageant winner Marisol González, but the two parted ways before getting married. In 2021, he married his partner Fernanda Gómez in a Catholic ceremony at Guadalajara Cathedral.
Canelo and Fernanda first met at a charity gala back in 2016.
His wife, Fernanda Gómez, is a social media influencer, businesswoman, and model. She owns a nail bar and boutique in Guadalajara. They have a daughter together named Maria.
Children
Canelo has four children in total – one son and three daughters.
All of his children are to different mothers. His first child was a daughter, Emily Cinnamon Álvarez, with his high school sweetheart Karen Beltran. At the time, he was age 16.
