The Origin Story

Ding is from Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

As a child, he attended the prestigious Wenzhou Zhouyuan Elementary School (also known as the ‘Chant Elementary School’).

Ding practiced chess from a young age and won his first championship – the Chinese Chess Championship – at the age of 16, in 2009.

Though Ding’s victory was marred somewhat by the fact that he won the final game by disqualification (his opponent automatically forfeited because he hadn’t taken his place by the start of the game), Ding nevertheless distinguished himself with a strong performance.

Ding did not participate in the 2010 Chinese Chess Championship, but he again won the competition in 2011 and 2012.

He further distinguished himself in strong showings in the biennial Chess Olympiads, taking home gold medals in the 2014 and 2018 team categories, and bronze and gold medals, respectively, in the individual categories.

Ding continued to go from strength to strength in the international chess scene.

By 2015, he was only the second-ever Chinese player to enter the top 10 of the FIDE (International Chess Federation) world rankings.

He also became the highest-rated Blitz player in the world in 2016.

Ding is perhaps most renowned for his remarkable 2017-2018 run in which he went undefeated in an unparalleled 100 matches.

During this period, Ding accrued 21 victories and 79 draws, and set a record for the longest unbeaten streak in high-level chess until it was surpassed in 2019.

Ding officially became the greatest Chinese chess player of all time in 2018, when his Elo score passed 2800.

In November 2018, his score hit 2816, making him jointly the tenth highest-ranked player in history.

Ding has continued to distinguish himself in recent years; in August 2019, he won the Sinquefield Cup and managed to beat the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, in their playoff match.

He also emerged victorious in the Chess Grand Tour in the same year.

Recent events interfered with Ding’s ability to compete internationally, and despite competitions organized internally, his results still suffered in 2020.

In the 2023 Tata Steel Chess Championship, Ding suffered a string of three losses, which took his Elo rating back below 2800.

n the summer of 2022, DIng qualified for World Chess Championship 2023 after reaching second place at the Candidates Tournament 2022. He secured his spot after winning the clash with GM Hikaru Nakamura.

After 14 games were completed with no clear winner, four rapid tiebreaker games were played on April 30th, 2023, to determine who would be crowned world champion.

After three draws in these tiebreaker games, Ding won game 4 to become the 17th undisputed world chess champion.

After becoming the world chess champion, Liren said that felt “a bit depressed.”

Girlfriend

Ding Liren has a girlfriend who, according to him, also plays chess. However, Ding is very private regarding his personal life and expressed a desire not to reveal any information about his girlfriend beyond this.

Children

It is unknown if Ding has children; given the fact he is not married, however, and that China is a very socially conservative society, it is highly unlikely.

IQ

Ding Liren’s IQ is thought to be around 150.

Note – there is no precise answer regarding Ding Liren’s IQ since he has never publicly revealed his IQ. However, many believe that Ding must have an exceptionally high IQ due to his incredible success in the game of chess.

This belief is supported by research, which indicates that top grandmasters usually have very high IQs.

For instance, Magnus Carlsen has an estimated IQ of 160, which is incredibly high compared to the average person’s score of 100.
