Ian Nepomniachtchi, nicknamed Nepo, is a Russian chess grandmaster.

Biography

He was born on July 14, 1990, in Bryansk, Russia, as Ian Alexandrovich Nepomniachtchi.

Nepomniachtchi learned chess at four.

Initially, he studied chess at home under the guidance of his grandfather Boris and his uncle Igor.

“As a child, I was very fond of the book of games by Alexander Alekhine,” Ian said in an interview in 2017. “I tried to draw the best from every outstanding grandmaster, but I strive to follow my own path.” 

At age 5, he started to train with Valentin Evdokimenko.

Nepo graduated from the Russian State Social University.

Chess Career

In 2002, Nepomniachtchi won the World Youth Chess Championship in the U12 group.

In April 2003, Ian achieved a 2400 rating for the first time.

In 2004, he was awarded the IM title.

In April 2005, Nepo reached a rating of 2500.

He became a Grandmaster at the age of 17, in 2007.

In August 2008, Nepo beat world-class GM Evgeny Bareev to grab Ordix Open. He won on tiebreak points.

In 2010, Ian became the European Chess Champion after crushing the Armenian GM Vladimir Akopian in the final game. In the same year, he represented Russia in the Chess Olympiad.

In December 2010, he beat Sergey Karjakin to win his first Russian Championship in Moscow at the Central Chess Club.

In April 2015, Nepomniachtchi and Daniil Dubov shared first place in the Aeroflot Open A.

In September 2015, Ian was the winner of the Moscow Blitz Chess Championships. The chess tournament was held at Gorbushin Mall. The silver went to Dmitry Andreikin.

World Rapid Chess Championship

In October 2015, he reached second place at the World Rapid Chess Championship in Berlin. The winner was Magnus Carlsen, who also took home $40,000. “Sharing second place in such a tournament is always a success,” Ian said at the time.

In 2018, Nepo won the Gideon Japhet Memorial in Jerusalem.

In early 2019, Ian placed third at the 81st Tata Steel Masters.

In 2020, Nepomniachtchi won the second title of the champion of Russia.

In April 2021, Nepomniachtchi won the Candidates Chess Tournament.

At the end of 2021, he lost the World Chess Championship 2021 to Magnus Carlsen. The match began with five consecutive draws.

In July 2022, he won the 2022 Candidates Tournament with a record 9.5/14 score for the second time. With this win, Ian has qualified for the 2023 World Championship.

In March 2023, Nepo had a peak rating of 2795.

2023 World Championship

His opponent at the 2023 World Championship is Ding Liren since Magnus Carlsen (who had been the world champion since 2013) announced he would not play.

Ding qualified by winning against Hikaru Nakamura.

From April 9 to April 30, 2023, the World Championship will be played in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Game 1 of the World Chess Championship 2023 finished with a draw.

Nepo had won Game 2.

The third round of the 2023 FIDE World Championship also finished with a draw.

Ding won game four in 47 moves and scored his first victory in the match for the title of World Chess Champion.

Game five was won by Nepo in 48 moves, who took a 3:2 lead. It was a Ruy Lopez. “Definitely, the position was in my prep,” Ian said

In Game 6, Ding found a mating net. Playing as White, Ding played the London system, a popular 1.d4 opening. After the match, Ian described it as one of his “worst games ever.” After 14 games the score was equal, however, Nepo ultimately lost in game 4 of the tiebreak.

Nepo participated at the 2024 Candidates Tournament, but eventually, Gukesh D won.

For participating in World Chess Championship 2023, Nepomniachtchi was awarded 45% of the prize fund (€2 million).

He was also a semiprofessional Dota 2 player.

In 2021, Nepo inked a sponsorship deal with Chess.com. “We are proud to support Ian,” said Chess.com’s CEO Erik Allebest.  In October 2021, he became a Nornickel partner.
