Brain Surgery

During the 2011 season, he started having vertigo-like symptoms.

On September 11, 2011, Holmes underwent brain surgery to clear up a condition called Chiari malformations — structural defects in the base of the skull and cerebellum. The most common symptom associated with a Chiari malformation is occipital headaches.

The procedure involved removing a chunk of his skull and replacing it with a titanium plate.

”I know when people hear ‘brain surgery,’ it conjures up all kinds of images, but this a relatively low-risk surgery and only takes about an hour and a half,” he said before the brain surgery.

About a month after surgery, Holmes found out that he was allergic to the adhesive that the doctors had used on the webbed titanium plate at the base of his skull.

Later, Holmes was airlifted to Johns Hopkins for another operation. ”The second surgery when I was sick and went to the ER and things, that scared everybody pretty good,” Holmes said.

As a reminder of his brain surgery, the American golfer keeps the chunk of his skull that the surgeon removed.

In 2014, Holmes won the Wells Fargo Championship.

In 2015, he was the winner of the Shell Houston Open and the Houston Open.

In 2016, JB finished in 6th place at the Farmers Insurance Open.

On February 17, 2019, Holmes won the Genesis Open over Justin Thomas. He rallied from a four-shot deficit in the final round. ”J.B. won, he played great,” Justin said. ”It’s always a bummer to hand a tournament [to someone].”

In 2023, he was removed from $30,000 Calcutta after he signed up under an abbreviated name, his first and middle: John Bradley.

Wife

In 2013, J.B. Holmes married Erica Holmes.

Erica was a nurse in Louisville, Kentucky, at the time.

The two first met in 2010 in Louisville.

The first golf tournament JB took Erica to was the Phoenix Open in 2011.

Erica also had to undergo brain surgeries. ”She had three before we even met,” Holmes told Golf in January 2017. He added: ”She doesn’t call mine brain surgery. With mine, they cut out a piece of skull and put a metal plate over it. She had brain surgery.”

She serves as the CEO at JB Holmes Golf.

Children

The couple has a son named Tucker.

The family also has a dog, a Goldendoodle named Ace.

”He’s like a family member,” JB revealed. ”It’s nice to have him around. He sleeps with us in the bed, and he’s part of the family.”

His slow play was criticized in the past. ”There’s times when I’m probably too slow, but it is what it is,” Holmes explained for Golf Channel in February 2019. ”I was never on the clock. Never even got a warning. TV wants everything to be real fast all the time.”

He is known for hitting the ball long distances. ”I was hitting it around 300 yards when I was 13,” he said.
