Jen Atkin Net Worth – $20 million
Jen Atkin is an American hairstylist and writer.
She is best known for her work as a columnist for the magazine Glamour, and as co-founder of the haircare line ‘Ouai.’
The NYT called her “the most influential hair arbiter of our time.”
The Origin Story
Atkin was born in Ecuador on March 10th, 1980.
She was adopted at birth. Jen Atkin’s ethnicity is white.
She was raised on the Hawaiian island of Oahu and in the Mormon city of St. George, Utah.
Jen was raised Mormon, and thus experienced a very conservative upbringing.
Atkin attributed her later drive to this strict upbringing, which encouraged her to set goals and push herself to attain them.
“I grew up in a religious Mormon community, and everyone watched Disney movies; my parents never watched rated R movies, we didn’t hear swear words and music, nothing, but I remember being so not into the Bible and Book of Mormon and being so into pop culture,” Atkin said in early 2022.
She added: “I had to have posters on my wall, and I just loved the idea of glam.”
Professional Career
Atkin famously arrived in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 19 with a mere $300 to her name.
She first worked as a receptionist at the West Hollywood salon of Estilo Salon.
During this time, she met renowned high-end jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, who is said to have boosted Atkin’s early career considerably by introducing her to some of her famous clients.
Atkin soon began to make a name for herself as an accomplished hairstylist.
She later worked at both the Chris McMillan and Andy LeCompte salons in Hollywood – positions that further allowed the young hairdresser to network with the rich and famous of the neighborhood.
“I will say that I’ve been very fortunate that through my time, I’ve been able to kind of earn the ability to pick and choose who I work with, and that feels really good,” Jen revealed in an interview with Chicks in the Office in December 2020.
Atkin’s big break came when she began working for the Kardashian family.
She was soon styling the family members’ hair for the interview sections of their smash-hit reality TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Atkin’s association with the family began when she met Kim Kardashian on a 2010 photo shoot for Cosmopolitan.
She later met Khloe Kardashian, who asked Atkin to style her hair for her X-Factor appearances.
Atkin was soon regularly employed by the whole family.
Atkin has established a number of salons in Dubai, Qatar, and Bahrain, and has regularly traveled to these salons since 2012.
She has stated that many stylists in the region are not adequately trained to deal with ‘thick, coarse hair’ and are unable to effectively curl hair.
Atkin continues to offer appointments at Andy LeCompte salons in Los Angeles; an appointment with the now-famous hairstylist can cost upwards of $600.
Founding Of Ouai
Atkin went on to found her own haircare company, ‘Ouai,’ along with a Dubai-based doctor and entrepreneur.
The brand is named for a French slang term that roughly means ‘yeah,’ and, according to Atkin, is supposed to sound ‘unpretentious.’
Ouai began as an online-only store, but now partners with the bricks-and-mortar beauty store Sephora.
In 2019, it branched out into body-care products.
Husband
Atkin dated the photographer Mike Rosenthal for five years before he proposed to her in Greece in 2016. Atkin later recalled that she was shocked by the proposal; despite having been together for a long time, the two had never discussed marriage.
Atkin and Rosenthal eloped for their official wedding, and were wed in Paris with just the two of them and the officiant at the ceremony.
Upon their return to the US, they had another small ceremony for friends and family.
Children
Atkin and Mike have a son (via a surrogate), River Julien Rosenthal, who was born on March 5, 2021.
Their daughter (via surrogate), Sloane Soleil Rosenthal, was born on March 31, 2022. “She truly is the sunshine of our home,” Jen said about her daughter.
Atkin had her eggs frozen in 2015.
