He was born on December 13, 1957, in Great Neck, New York, USA.

In 1979, Joel received his B.S. summa cum laude from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1980, Greenblatt earned his MBA from the Wharton School.

Gotham Capital

In 1985, he started a hedge fund, Gotham Capital, with a startup capital of $7 million. Most of the money was provided by junk-bond king Michael Milken.

From 1994 to 1995, Greenblatt served as a chairman of the board of the aerospace company Alliant Techsystems.

In 1997, Joel published his first book, ”You Can Be a Stock Market Genius.” The book is a practical guide for fund managers.

In 2006, he released ”The Little Book That Still Beats the Market.” In the book, Greenblatt described his Magic Formula — a ”long-term investment strategy designed to help investors buy a group of above-average companies but only when they are available at below-average prices.”

Joel recommended the acquisition of 30 good (but cheap) companies with a high earnings yield. ”Companies that achieve a high return on capital are likely to have a special advantage of some kind,” he wrote.

Many studies have found merit in Joel’s “magic investing formula” in several markets worldwide.

Also in 2006, he started to teach at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.

In 2007, Greenblatt and Robert Goldstein, together with Gary Curhan, created the Gotham Prize for Cancer Research. Every year, an individual with the most innovative idea in cancer research will receive $1 million.

In 2008, Gotham Asset Management was created as the successor to Gotham Capital. Robert Goldstein and Joel serve as Managing Principals and co-CIOs.

In October 2009, Greenblatt started the online money management firm — Formula Investing.

In 2011, Joel published a book titled – ”The Big Secret for the Small Investor: A New Route to Long-Term Investment Success.”

In February 2014, Formula Investing merged with Gotham Asset Management.
