Michael Condrey is the President of 31st Union and former studio head of Sledgehammer Games.

Biography

He was born on October 10, 1972.

In 1997, Condrey earned his bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the University of Washington.

In June 1998, his senior thesis was published in the Journal of Molecular Ecology.

For a while, he served as a scuba diving instructor and boat captain in the Cayman Islands.

”Got into scuba diving as a dive instructor,” he told IGN. ”Love that. Left the University of Washington to go pursue sort of my dream of being on a Caribbean beach, which I did.”

From June 1998 to July 2008, he worked at Visceral Games.

Dead Space

In 2008, Condrey was involved in the production of Dead Space, a survival horror video game.

”Dead Space was a period of time that we’re very proud of, and have been humbled by,” he told Stevivor in October 2014. ”It was a very different development for us; it was a grassroots, ‘prove yourself’ type of experience.” 

Sledgehammer Games

On July 21, 2009, Michael and Glen Schofield founded Sledgehammer Games, a video game developer company. It later became a subsidiary of Activision.

”We founded Sledgehammer Games to bring together a world-class development team with a singular goal of delivering excellence for fans,” Michael said.

Call of Duty: WWII

He served as the director of Call of Duty: WWII, a first-person shooter video game released in 2017.

”We wanted to tell a story based on real events but unique to us,” Condrey told Games Radar in May 2017. ”Our squad is First Infantry, but it’s twelve men and their journey, so it’s very unique.”

Call of Duty: WWII made $500 million in revenue during its first three days of release.

”Call of Duty: WWII for us has really been about delivering something special for fans, and our team of artists, engineers, animators, concept art designers have really tried to bring to life something special, and like a film, we put our hearts and souls into delivering something that will really move fans,” Michael said in an interview.

On February 20, 2018, Condrey and Schofield left Sledgehammer Games. At the time, Michael was still working with Activision. He left the company in December 2018.

Activision said in a press release: ”We thank Glen and Michael for their tremendous body of work on Call of Duty and look forward to continuing to collaborate with them in their new roles.”

On February 4, 2019, the creation of a new 2K Games studio in Silicon Valley was announced, with Condrey as Studio Head.

31st Union

On February 11, 2020, 2K Games announced that 2K Silicon Valley will officially be known as 31st Union.

”Our name and studio represent the spirit of California in its rich diversity of thought, art, music, innovation, and cultural representation that have defined the current golden age of entertainment and technology here in Silicon Valley,” Condrey said in a statement.
