While the beautiful young blonde was not the only woman to go missing that year—there were 250,000 missing women reported in 2021 alone—she was probably the most publicized.

The young influencer had hit the open road with her boyfriend and unemployed carpenter, Brian Laundrie.

At the time, Petito had spent her savings on the white Ford campervan the pair would call home.

They meandered across the west coast, visiting national parks and state parks as Petito shared footage to her YouTube channel.

In early August, though, Petito’s influencer image started to unravel when the pair were captured on camera after engaging in an altercation.

The August 12 situation stemmed from a physical fight, after which Petito struck Laundrie.

Following a night to cool off, Brian Laundrie flew back to Tampa, Florida, and sold some belongings so the pair could continue their trip.

They met again in Salt Lake City, Utah, and ventured to Jackson, Wyoming.

The pair were sighted for the last time at a Merry Piglets restaurant, before things went tragically wrong.

A body found is confirmed to be that of Gabby Petito on September 21, 2022, following her family’s pleas to the Laundrie family to share any information they have.

Exactly one month later, the remains of Laundrie—who killed himself after confessing to killing his girlfriend—are confirmed in the Carlton Reserve.

While the public shed no tears for Brian Laundrie’s cowardly violence towards a 22-year-old girl, or his subsequent death, they did have questions about Laundrie’s mother.

The Origin Story

Roberta Maria Vinci—who would later become Roberta Maria Laundrie after marrying Christopher Laundrie—is a mom and business owner.

She has two children—a daughter named Cassandra “Cassie” Laundrie, who was born in 1989, and the deceased Brian Laundrie, who was born in 1998.

Roberta moved around a lot as a kid, living in South Carolina, Florida, and parts of New York for much of her life.

When she and her husband settled down in North Port, the pair were operating Juicer Services.

Roberta and Chris—who is seven years older than Roberta—have operated the commercial juicing equipment company for several years, and run much of their business from their sprawling 10,000 sq. ft. block in Sarasota County, Florida.

Suspicious Behavior

There was a stretch of time when audiences across the US defended Roberta Laundrie.

Those sympathies rapidly dried up as time went on, as Roberta ignored the pleas of a grieving family searching for their daughter, called 911 over a bounty hunter attempting to question her, and sent her son a suspicious note.

Eventually, the country was labeling Roberta Laundrie an “insensitive, cold hearted” person for the messages they sent the Petito family, as it became apparent that they had probably known Gabby Petito was dead at the time.

Update – in March 2023, Laundrie explained in a sworn affidavit that she gave the letter to her son in May 2021 — before Gabby Petito’s death. However, attorney Patrick Reilly, who represents Nichole Schmidt and Joe Petito disagrees, and said that “the letter seems to indicate that it was written after Gabby’s death.”

Cold hearted, callous, and brutal though they were, the actions of Roberta Laundrie and her husband have yet to see her imprisoned for any crime—other than the crime of defending the man who murdered an innocent young girl on the trip of a lifetime.

The civil trial between the families of Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito was rescheduled the trial for May 2024 in Sarasota County Circuit Court. It was scheduled for August 2023.
