Santiago Calatrava is a Spanish architect, sculptor, and painter widely known for his bridges supported by single-leaning pylons.
He was born on July 28, 1951, in Valencia, Spain, as Santiago Calatrava Valls.
In 1974, Calatrava graduated from the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
In 1981, Santiago founded his own architecture and engineering firm in Zürich.
From 1984 to 1987, Calatrava built his first bridge, the Bac de Roda Bridge in Barcelona.
In 1988, Calatrava was the recipient of the City of Barcelona Prize for Plastic Arts.
In 1992, Santiago finished the Montjuïc Communications Tower in Barcelona.
In 2005, he was awarded the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects.
In 2012, the famous architect received an AIA commemorative gold medallion.
In 2013, he received an honorary doctorate from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
In August 2019, Calatrava was fined by the Court of Accounts of Venice to pay 78k euros ($91k) for negligence during the design of the Ponte della Costituzione over the Grand Canal in Venice. It links the train station to Piazzale Roma.
The bridge – measuring 94 meters long – cost €11.6 million instead of the €7 million initially planned.
Calatrava said the extra costs were linked to improvements to the canal-side areas next to the bridge.
World Trade Center Transportation Hub
He designed the WTC Transportation Hub in NYC at the rebuilt World Trade Center. The Oculus, the main station house of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, resembles a “bird flying from the hands of a child.”
”I am responsible for the project, including a big part of the engineering,” Calatrava told Bloomberg. He added: ”I do the engineering work for all of my stations.”
At a cost of $4 billion in public money, The Transportation Hub is one of the world’s most expensive train stations. It was originally budgeted at $2 billion.
”I had previously built several railway facilities throughout Europe, so I had strong background in the subject,” the Spanish architect said in another interview.
