The Origin Story
She was born on June 19, 1940, in Schenectady, New York, as Shirley Ann Roque.
Shirley discovered her love for cars at an early age, frequently accompanying her father, a mechanic, to the garage.
By the age of 16, she had already started street racing. It wasn’t just a pastime but a passion that would shape her future in unimaginable ways.
The First Woman to Obtain a NHRA License
In 1965, Muldowney became the first woman to obtain an NHRA license and, subsequently, the first woman to compete professionally in drag racing.

Muldowney’s career in drag racing was immortalized in the 1983 film “Heart Like a Wheel.”

After two years of physical therapy, she returned to racing, showcasing her indomitable spirit. “I’m lucky to be alive,” she said on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” in 1986.
In 2008, a group of motorsport specialists convened by ESPN ranked the top 25 racers in history. In this prestigious listing, Muldowney, the “First Lady of Drag Racing,” secured the 21st position.

After her divorce from her husband Jack in 1972 due to differing aspirations in the racing world, she began a romantic relationship with Connie Kalitta — the CEO of Kalitta Air and the owner of Kalitta Motorsports.
He served as her crew chief, and the pair collaborated professionally, with Kalitta constructing what Muldowney would later refer to as her best car.
