The Origin Story

Souleye’s real name is Mario Treadway, and he was born on May 3, 1980, in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

He is of Native American and Italian descent, while music has always been part of his family life.

He began rapping at a young age during his time at high school in MA, and he graduated in 1999.

Following his graduation, he went on to study at Western New England College but dropped out after just one year to focus on his musical career.

Souleye experienced a few extremely tough years at the start of the century, as his best friend was diagnosed with cancer in 2003.

The following year, his brother committed suicide, which led Souleye to embrace ‘Music Matters’ as his mission statement, and he set about honoring his brother with his next releases.

In 2010, Souleye secretly married Alanis Morisette in a private ceremony.

They began dating just one year earlier soon after Alanis split from environmental lawyer Tom Ballanco.

They met at a meditation gathering in a Los Angeles residence.

They welcomed their first son, Ever, to the world in 2010, followed by a daughter Onyx in 2016, and their second son Winter in 2019.

Away from music, Souleye regularly posts on social media about various issues of the day.

He shows support for issues including Universal Health Care and Tiger Conservation, but it’s not known if he makes a financial contribution to support these charitable causes.

So, how much is Souleye worth?

As an American hip-hop musician and rapper, Souleye has made his name on the independent scene, having released ten albums without musical representation.

His most notable collaborations have been alongside the Backstreet Boys, BLVD, Bassnectar, and Alanis Morisette – the latter being his wife.

He started his music career in 2001 alongside a group known as the Transcendental Alliance.

This was a collective of artists that traveled around performing hip-hop tracks independently, and it provided Souleye with the inspiration he needed to make it as a solo artist.

Two years later in 2003, he released his debut solo album Soul Sessions, which enjoyed reasonable success with his followers and fans.

His next album was Flexible Morality, which he wrote in the woods surrounding Mount Greylock in Massachusetts.

This was quickly followed by Universoul Alchemy, which dropped in the same year.

By 2006, Souleye had teamed up with Samuel Pohner, becoming known as Souleye and Sleepyhead.

Their first release together was Intergalactic Vibes, which was honored with an award by Relix.

This album was a break of sorts for Souleye, as it led him to perform at Jamcruise, where he performed with Bassnectar and collaborated on the song Amorphous Form.

As he became more mainstream, Souleye landed a gig with the electronic band BLVD and toured with them until 2009. He also featured heavily on their album Music for People, before returning to solo performances and releases.

In the years between 2010 and 2019, he released six independent albums, including Balance in Babylon (2010), Iron Horse Running (2013), Shapeshifting (2015), Wildman (2017), and Soul School (2019).

Talking about releasing Wildman, Souleye said:

“I’ve always wanted to tap into this push that I’ve always had – this strive to be the best me I can be. But at the same time, I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety and I’ve had things come at me that I wasn’t expecting. So I wanted to write a song that was able to show my ability to bounce back or stay inspired even when I felt I was at my wit’s end.”

In 2023, Souleye released an album titled – “Disguised As Tomorrow.”

Because Souleye releases his music independently, he primarily earns royalties via streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

Although he’s not hugely successful on Spotify, many of his tracks have been streamed thousands of times, with his Snow Angel release alongside Alanis Morisette being one of his most popular tracks.

Souleye also has a YouTube channel, which has around 2,000 subscribers.

His music has been streamed on YouTube around 500,000 times, which has earned him a share of ad revenue from the platform.

Another source of revenue for Souleye has been his musical tours, and he has performed all over the world with other musicians.

He performs at festivals and live music venues, and often live-streams his tours to his fans back home, regardless of where he is performing in the world.

Due to his successful releases as an independent musician and his various high-profile collaborations with other artists, American hip-hop performer Souleye has an estimated net worth of $5 million.
