Suga Free Net Worth – $3 million

What is rapper Suga Free’s net worth?

Introduction

Suga Free is an American rapper with a rapid-fire style and a distinct sound that has earned him plenty of fans and accolades in his long career.

From breaking onto the hip-hop scene back in 1997 with Street Gospel—his debut album—Suga Free will go down in history as a lyricist, rapper, and creator of one of the greatest records of its time.

But there’s a darker side to this California rapper.

He may boast an impressive discography and features on tracks by the biggest names in hip hop, but he’s also been involved in the s## industry as a pimp.

Here’s what we know.

The Origin Story

Suga Free—whose real name is Dejuan Walker—was born in Gardena, California, on January 17, 1970.

Dejuan’s childhood was pretty transient—he moved from Gardena to Oakland to Compton and then on to Pomona, California, by the time he was 10 years old.

He was sent to a juvenile detention center run by the county of Los Angeles early on in his teen years.

He described his life at that time as “addictive,” explaining how easy it was for him to rob “everything that moved.”

Juvenile hall had its perks for a lost young wannabe thug, though—namely, he learned how to rap there.

In juvenile hall, Dejuan would rap over whatever beats he and the other delinquent teens could get a hold of—but the gold standard was to flow over a beat by MC Bear.

Bear would create beats out of thin air, tapping on surfaces, snapping his fingers, and beating on his chest while Suga spit a rhyme.

Out of juvenile hall, Dejuan again fell into trouble—with more burglaries, more violence, and more crime.

He caught his first sentence at 15, getting jailed on burglary charges.

His sentence was 6 months, a period the young aspiring rapper thought “felt like forever.”

After jail, Suga Free took a new direction—he started pimping.

Dejuan had his first child young.

At 19, he and his girlfriend welcomed their daughter into the world, and when the couple broke up, Jene went with her mom.

When looking back on that turning point later, Walker remembered a conversation he had with his baby mama.

“I always told her that after [her] I’m just gonna have hoes.” Walker became a pimp for one woman, and then expanded his “stable” to include her best friend.

Gradually that number grew.

In a 2020 interview, Suga Free opened up about baby mama drama and admitted that four of his children were to four different prostitutes that worked for him.

He looked back at how one of his children’s mothers would periodically vandalize his property and disappear with his kids.

It was this period in Walker’s life that led to him experiencing a “bad mental space.”

Suga Free’s eldest daughter, Jene, graduated from college in 2020.

His youngest son, Lil May May—who Walker describes as his twin—is a savvy young tech whizz who enjoys gaming and music.

Career

Pimping may have been a money spinner for a cash strapped young Suga Free, but rap was the real path to success for this skilled emcee.

And he got his start through his dad, of all people.

Early on, Dejuan was a fan of legendary rock icons like the Rolling Stones and Steely Dan.

But it wasn’t until early 1996 when a chance meeting meant he captured the attention of a star producer of the era—and a fellow Compton alum—DJ Quik.

Quik is best known for his work with Tupac, Erick Sermon, Snoop Dogg, and Kurupt.

DJ Quik took an interest in Suga Free’s style, and produced his debut album, the 1997 cult hit, Street Gospel.

Street Gospel went to #37 on the Billboard R&B / Hip Hop Albums chart that year.

Suga Free’s style garnered more attention once his sound was out there in the mainstream. Tracks like Why U Bullsh****n? catapulted Walker to rap stardom with its conversational, storytelling approach and quickfire delivery.

He’d go on to feature on Snoop Dogg’s 2000 Tha Last Meal—the pair would remain friends and work together for the next couple of decades.

A guest spot on Xzibit’s Restless album, another album in 2004, then one in 2006 would solidify his place as a California force to be reckoned with.

Suga Free took a break from the rap game after his 2006 album, but returned to the scene in 2019 with The Resurrection.
