Takashi Murakami, dubbed the Japanese Andy Warhol, is a Japanese contemporary artist who has a net worth of $100 million. He is best known as the creator of the artistic movement “Superflat.”

He was born on February 1, 1962, in Tokyo, Japan.

His mother was a homemaker, while his father was a taxi driver.

”When I was in high school, I was fat,” Murakami told HBR in March 2021. ”I was unpopular-with only one or two real friends. I just played video games in coffee shops.” 

In 1988, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Japanese painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

In 1993, Takashi earned his doctorate from the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo.

In 1994, he moved to New York to attend PS1’s International Studio Program.

In 1996, Takashi’s sculptures and paintings were featured at the second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane.

Also in 1996, Murakami founded the Hiropon factory in Tokyo.

In 1998, he created the sculpture – ”My Lonesome Cowboy.” It depicts a smiling nude anime-inspired male figure with spiked hair.

In 2000, Takashi produced an art historical moment in curating his exhibition of ”Superflat” artists for Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art.

”When I first proposed the idea of Superflat in 2000, the Internet culture hadn’t yet emerged,” Murakami said for CR Fashion Book in May 2020. He added: ”I came up with the idea at a time when the iMac had just come out, and cell phones had a very weak signal with a lot of noise when you were talking.”

In 2008, Murakami founded his own Kaikai Kiki gallery in Tokyo. In the same year, he was named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine.

In 2009, Pharrell unveiled a collaborative sculpture with Takashi at Art Basel. The sculpture was sold for $2 million.

In February 2012, he opened an exhibition in Doha, Qatar.

In 2013, Murakami released ”Jellyfish Eyes,” a Japanese fantasy film.

”I know it’s a weak film – the story has not enough shocks and surprises,” Takashi said in an interview with Business Times. ”But that’s alright. In the art world, when you make your first painting, it’s going to be weak. So I accept that I have to go through a process before I become good.”

In 2016, the first episode of the anime TV series ”Six Hearts Princess” was released.

In 2018, he collaborated with fashion designer Virgil Abloh on a series of artworks. Murakami and Abloh first met in 2018 when Virgil served as creative director for Kanye West, while Murakami designed an album cover for the rapper.

”What triggered the collaboration was our re-encounter when Virgil came to visit my show at the MCA Chicago last year, where he has his own exhibition scheduled next year,” Murakami said to Architectural Digest.

In October 2020, Tekashi 6ix9ine received a tattoo with Murakami’s famed flower design on his shoulder.

In 2022, Takashi designed Sir Lewis Hamilton’s helmet for that the Suzuka Grand Prix.
