He was born on January 29, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, as Thomas William Selleck, to parents — Robert Dean Selleck and Martha Selleck (née Jagger).
In 1962, Selleck graduated from Grant High School.
He attended college at USC on a full basketball scholarship. Selleck dropped out of the University of Southern California to pursue an acting career.
In 1967, he received a contract from the 20th Century Fox.
From 1967 to 1973, Tom served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry. He attained the rank of sergeant.
From 1974 to 1975 as Jed Andrews, Selleck appeared on The Young and the Restless.

Selleck got his big break with his role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum P.I. He performed from 1980 to 1988 in 158 episodes. Tom is the only actor to appear in every episode of the show.
Initially, he didn’t like his iconic Magnum P.I. role. “Mainly because of family and a sense of privacy,” Tom confessed.
In 1984, he won an Emmy for Magnum, P.I.
Turned Down the Indiana Jones Role
In 1981, Selleck was the first choice to play Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. However, Tom had to decline because he was committed to his role in Magnum P.I. The role went to Harrison Ford.
