Biography
He was born on November 16, 1928, in Holdenville, Oklahoma, as William Martin Gulager. “It’s a Danish name,” he said. “It came from something that means ‘fields of gold.‘”
Gulager received his nickname, Clu, from his dad for the clu-clu birds who were nesting at their house.
After high school, he spent two years in the US Marine Corps. Later, Gulager graduated from the Baptist-affiliated Baylor University in Waco.
In 1955, Clu got his first screen credit in an episode of the series Omnibus.
In 1964, he had his first major film role alongside Ronald Reagan and Lee Marvin in The Killers.
The Tall Man
From 1960 to 1962, Gulager starred in 75 episodes of The Tall Man as Billy the Kid.
“Billy the Kid was a notorious outlaw historically, and he killed people,” Clu said in an interview about the TV series. “And Congress said you can’t make really to get into a hero for the children because that’s that’s bad imagery, it’s bad influence bad history, and they stopped our show after two years.”
Sheriff Pat Garrett, portrayed by Barry Sullivan, was another main character.
“When he wasn’t drunk, he [Barry Sullivan] kind of looked to me he looked like kind of an old turtle, and I remember working with him, and I was hoping his neck wouldn’t come out because it was really wrinkled, and I said, why did they get him to play this part but I know why — he was a good friend of Lou’s assistant, and both were you know what, I can’t say it here,” Clu revealed.
He added: “Well, both were cocksmen.”
The Virginian
From 1963 to 1968, Gulager played Emmett Ryker in 104 episodes of The Virginian — a Western TV series that also starred Lee J. Cobb, Doug McClure, and James Drury.
In 2013, Clu was the recipient of a lifetime achievement award at the Bare Bones International Film Festival.
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood was his final screen credit. Gulager played a bookshop owner in Quentin Tarantino’s film.

“I was a cowboy from Oklahoma, and cowboys, one of the things they do, they fix fences when holes appear in the wire fences, and they do from time to time because things happen to break the wire and the whole form and if the cattle — they will actually sense that somehow and they get out and you lose them,” Gulager told Jim Longworth in an interview.
“I was the most proud of my whole life that I didn’t lose any white-faced cattle during my watch — after that, it was all downhill.”
