In December 2018, Debra Newell married John Meehan after about two months of dating.
At the time, she had already married and divorced four times. Debra also has four kids.
Meehan was previously married to Tonia Sells. None of Meehan’s family attended the wedding. They had two children, Abigail and Emily.
Debra and John first met in October 2014 after connecting on a dating website. Meehan was released from jail just two days before for breaking a restraining order.

”When you go on dating websites, you put a lot there,” Debra said in a recent interview. She added: ”Which I never want anyone to do again because I think that can get you in trouble these days.”
After some time, she found out several secrets about Meehan, including the fact that he had been lying about being a doctor (he claimed to be an anesthesiologist in Iraq), a highly questionable history with women (like threatening and stalking women), and not revealing details about his prison record.
”Almost everything he told me was a lie,” she told NBC News. ”He told me he was an anesthesiologist.”
In March 2016, she left Meehan.
”He was a doctor, so I thought he’d got a career,” Debra told E! about what attracted her to John initially. ”His charm. I’m learning about charming people, though. His looks, his interest. He said all the right things, so he had a family. He had a picture on his dating site that is of his daughters.”

Afterward, John harassed Debra by posting nude photos on Facebook.
In August 2016, John attacked Newell’s daughter Terra. After a fight between the two, Terra stabbed Meehan several times.
”When I got the knife from him, I just stabbed him,” Terra said in an interview. ”I didn’t give it a second thought. I just thought it’s him or me.” Terra also said: ”I was like ‘I don’t want him to get back up, I don’t want him to try to hurt me again.’” She was later diagnosed with PTSD.
”It lasted seconds, but felt like hours,” Terra told People in August 2019. ”In just 32 seconds, my life changed forever.”
”There was no verbal altercation that preceded the activity,” said Jennifer Manzella — Newport Beach police spokeswoman for LA Times.
Meehan died in the hospital four days later, on August 24, 2016. He was 57.
”We’re all healing now, but you have to think that there was a reason for it, and we’re all getting stronger because of it,” Newell said.

On October 2, 2017, Wondery premiered the podcast, Dirty John, focusing on the life of John Meehan, especially John’s relationship with Debra.
Note – Dirty John is one of Meehan’s nicknames.
It was downloaded more than 10 million times within one and a half months of release. The podcast was hosted by Christopher Goffard. ”Something about John Meehan chilled me in a way nobody else has,” Goffard confessed.
