James Campbell wrote in his book about Heimo:

”The Arctic is a wilderness, but it has been inhabited for perhaps as long as 10,000 years by descendants of those who crossed the Bering Land Bridge.”

Campbell also wrote:

”Modern definitions of wilderness won’t allow for the presence of people, however; in fact, they demand their absence.”

He appears in ”The Last Alaskans,” an American reality TV series that follows a few trappers and families who live in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

Heimo said during the first few minutes of The Last Alaskans’ premiere episode:

”That’s the way that man has been for nearly three million years. In the land we live in you’re part of the food chain.”

Korth went on to say:

”The only pressure you and all the animals have here is keeping yourself alive.”

The series premiered on Animal Planet on May 25, 2015.

Heimo explained in an interview the reason he accepted to appear in The Last Alaskans:

”I think we share that lifestyle on camera with everybody so people can see there are still people living like this. That’s a big reason why.”

The 2nd season premiered on the Discovery Channel in April 2016.

He met his wife while living in an Eskimo whaling village on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea.

The couple is among the only permanent residents of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge – the largest national wildlife refuge in the country. Only 6 families of white settlers are allowed to keep cabins in the refuge.

The Korth’s right to their cabin expires with the death of Heimo’s last daughter.

He said for Seat42f:

”A newcomer cannot come in there and do what we are doing now, it is in the law.”

Korth later added:

”The people that were there prior to it being a refuge, there were seven of us, the federal government allowed us to stay and to live this lifestyle.”

In 2019, Heimo and Edna Korth are briefly discussed in the book, “Warrior’s Creed: A Life of Preparing for and Facing the Impossible,” by Roger Sparks and Don Rearden.

Mosquitoes are a real problem for them in the summertime.

He said in an interview with Hollywood Soap Box:

”A lot of people don’t realize that because the tundra, it’s frozen, and so when it rains, and when there’s water from the snowmelt, it doesn’t soak into the ground because of the tundra, because of the frozen ground.”

Heimo continued:

”So there’s all these puddles all over the tundra. It’s a very wet ground, and that’s just the breeding ground for the mosquitoes.”

Daughters

Heimo and Edna Korth have four daughters, Millie, Coleen, Rhonda, and Krin.

Millie is Edna’s daughter from a previous marriage.

Coleen Ann Korth was born on May 29, 1982. On June 2, 1984, she died on the Coleen River when the family’s canoe overturned in the icy waters.

After Coleen’s death, Edna and Heimo petitioned the Board of Geographic Names to have the unnamed peak designated as Coleen Ann Mountain. Later, Heimo built a memorial cross for her close to the Coleen River.

Krin is a firefighter and her husband Scott is a Marine stationed in Jacksonville.

Other famous people that are part of a reality TV series in Alaska are – Atz Kilcher, Andy Bassich, and Chip Hailstone.
