Joseph Mawle Net Worth – $2 million

What is Joseph Mawle’s net worth? Is Joseph Mawle married?

Introduction

Joseph Mawle played a pivotal part in the iconic Game of Thrones series—but it wasn’t a role that got a lot of screen time.

Fortunately, Joseph has since moved on to bigger and brighter opportunities—like lead roles in Ripper Street and Troy: Fall of a City.

In what could arguably be one of the biggest roles of any actor’s life: Joseph Mawle played Jesus Christ.

The Passion actor keeps going from strength to strength on our screens—but what do we know about Joseph Mawle behind the scenes?

Let’s find out.

The Origin Story

Joseph Daniel Turner Mawle—or Joe, to his friends—was born in Oxford, England, on March 21, 1974.

Raised on a farm outside Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire, Mawle grew up with two siblings, his secretary mom, and dad Richard—who still farms the same land now.

The Mawle family lived on their charming property in a Victorian-era manor house—which is where Joseph learned how to farm, ride, and drive big machinery.

“I can drive tractors, ride a horse, and shoot [a gun].” The actor added sarcastically, “Useful skills on Oxford Street!”

A Bump in the Road

Mawle attended primary school—the British version of elementary school—in Stratford-upon-Avon.

It was there that he was diagnosed as suffering from dyslexia, the learning disability that would see him enrolled at a special needs boarding school from age 13 to 16.

When Joseph left school at age 16, he already knew he wanted to be an actor.

Unfortunately, he contracted Labyrinthitis that same year.

The ear inflammation, which impacts the labyrinth—or inner ear—can cause vertigo and hearing impairment.

Mawle was able to make a near full recovery but was left with 70% hearing impairment in the upper register (high pitched noises) and tinnitus.

Back on Track

After a minor detour in his life plan, Joseph was back on track after recovering from Labyrinthitis.

He convinced a local performance director to let him do practice-based study in performing arts under him.

Willing to take on any odd jobs to support himself while he followed his dreams, Mawle was working as a part-time fitness instructor and dishwasher.

He was still performing, too—he produced his own performance of Hamlet, and took on some roles for the Box Clever Theatre Company.

In early 2000, he won a scholarship to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

The prestigious school was home to Mawle until he left in 2002—the same year he scored his first TV ad for Guinness.

With no agent, Mawle went looking for acting work. And he found it, scoring a major role in the 2003 production of Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida.

That was followed by gigs at Nuffield Theatre, and in the Royal Exchange, Manchester’s Antony and Cleopatra.

Following a stellar performance in straight-to-TV movie Soundproof in 2006—which required its lead actor to be deaf—Mawle started to gain some attention.

His portrayal of the lead character earned him an RTS Breakthrough on Screen nomination in 2007.

Next came gigs in Dunkirk, Persuasion, Clapham Junction, and the 2008 BBC / HBO miniseries, The Passion.

Mawle might be a seasoned stage actor, but 2009 and 2010 saw him take on a host of projects—from Philip Ridley’s Heartless to BBC’s Five Daughters, and the film festival favorite, Sometimes The Moon Is Velvet.

2011 saw Mawles’ stint on Game of Thrones as Benjen Stark—although he waited 6 seasons to return after being in the pilot.

By 2019, Mawle had amassed a resume that included the Bruce Willis hit, The Cold Light of Day, and Tim Burton’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Then, Mawle scored a true gem.

In October of that year, it was announced that he was joining Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power cast.

Of all the show’s characters, none have been more notably absent from the trailers as Adar—the character played by Mawle.
