Introduction
Richard Sterban is the bass singer of the legendary Oak Ridge Boys.

Biography
He was born on April 24, 1943, in Camden, New Jersey, US, as Richard Anthony Sterban.
Richard graduated from Collingswood High School. After high school, Sterban went to Trenton State College.
He started to sing as a young child in church.
“Believe it or not, you probably would not realize that right now, but the first singing that I ever did was as a boy soprano,” Sterban said in 2021.
“I know that’s hard to believe. I was in church, I was in Sunday school, I was about six years old, and you know, I don’t remember the song I sang, but I do remember that experience in my mind, and I do remember that on that particular day I felt impressed this is what my calling was.”
In his 20s, Richard started to sing in a group called J.D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet. At the time, the group was singing backup for Elvis Presley.
He said in an interview with CBS:
“For about two years prior to joining The Oak Ridge Boys, I signed with J. D. Sumner in the Stamps Quartet and for about a year and a half of that time, I had the opportunity and the privilege to sing with the king of rock and roll Elvis, and it was an amazing experience in my life.”
“Back then, Elvis was probably the biggest star in the world,” Richard explained in another interview.
“His tour was, you know, the biggest tour in the music business, and to be a part of that was, you know, very very very exciting, there’s no doubt about it, and now that many years have passed and I have a chance to look back on that I’m so glad that I had that opportunity to actually get to know Elvis.”
The Oak Ridge Boys
In 1972, Sterban left J.D. Sumner and the Stamps to join Oak Ridge Boys.
Sterban joined after Douglas “Noel” Fox left the band.
The band has a history going back to the 1940s.
Oak Ridge Boys’ current members include:
- Richard Sterban, bass;
- William Lee Golden, baritone;
- Joe Bonsall, tenor;
- Duane Allen, lead singer.
“One of the reasons we’ve been able to experience longevity is that we are the best of friends,” he confessed in an interview.
On March 26, 1981, Oak Ridge Boys released their fifth album – “Fancy Free.” The album included their biggest hit, “Elvira.” The song reached #1 on Canadian RPM Country Tracks, US Cash Box Top 100, and US Hot Country Songs.
In 1994, he was enshrined in the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame.
Oak Ridge Boys were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000. In the same year, Sterban appeared in the documentary – “He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley.”
In 2007, Oak Ridge Boys appeared on Shooter Jennings‘ album The Wolf.
In 2012, Sterban released a book titled – “From Elvis to Elvira My Life on Stage.”
“In that book, there are some great Elvis stories,” Richard explained in 2013. “Elvis was a great practical jokester he loved to play practical jokes.”
In April 2014, the group released a live album called – “Boys Night Out.”
In 2015, Sterban and the Oak Ridge Boys were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. “We’ll be there forever,” Sterban declared at the time. He added: “It’s a big deal.”
In December 2018, the group sang “Amazing Grace” during the funeral of George H. W. Bush. They started to sing for President Bush in 1982.
On October 25, 2019, Oak Ridge Boys released the album Down Home Christmas via Lightning Rod Records.
Also in 2019, the group announced a partnership with the Department of Justice to “bring awareness to elder fraud and abuse.”
