Introduction
Robin Meade is a US-born and raised television news anchor.
Best known for HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade, this lead anchor is also a former Miss Ohio, a regional Emmy Award-winner, and a country singer with two albums under her belt.
If you’re wondering why the name Robin Meade is so familiar, she won hearts around the United States when she took on HLN’s Morning Express gig to break some of the biggest stories of the year—or maybe of the decade—all in one timeslot.
With the death of Kobe Bryant and his beloved daughter in a helicopter crash, Donald Trump’s impeachment proceedings, and the Grammy award wins from the night before—Meade had her hands full and all eyes on her for the largest slot on the CNN-owned network.
As always, she handled it with grace and sensitivity.
Here’s how she became so good at what she does.
The Origin Story
Robin Michelle Meade was born on the 21st of April, 1969, in New London, Ohio.
She was one of three children to Linro and Sharon Meade—she has a sister named Tonda and a brother named Kevin.
Meade was raised in New London, attending New London High School.
There, she enjoyed cheerleading and media studies, and she competed in beauty pageants while she was still in high school.
In 1987, Robin won the Huron County Junior Miss pageant.
After graduating from high school in New London, Meade made the move to Malone University in Canton, Ohio.
She majored in radio and television production before moving to Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, staying close to home as she minored in political science.
After graduating from Ashland in 1991, Robin was at something of a loose end as she decided what to do next.
She entered the Miss Ohio USA beauty pageant, winning the crown and the title in 1992, and got as far as the semi-finals at the Miss America pageant in 1993 before knuckling down to pursue a broadcasting career.

A Career Woman
Meade’s broadcasting career started at WMFD-TV in Mansfield, Ohio.
As a reporter, she covered stories from Columbus to Cleveland, eventually getting a job in Miami, Florida, as a news anchor.
In 1995, the outgoing and attentive anchor won a regional Emmy Award for her coverage of the Fox River Grove collision.
The collision, which claimed the lives of seven young students on a school bus in Illinois, was found to be caused by faulty infrastructure and poor timing/layout issues.
Meade covered the story with compassion, earning her accolades within the news industry.
Robin went on to NBC Chicago, where she covered the Olympics in 1996 and the Centennial Olympic Park bombing.
When she left the NBC affiliate, she jumped over to CNN Headline News—the network that would soon become known as HLN.
On her first day on air, one of the worst tragedies in American history struck—September 11th, 2001.
She covered the story, as well as subsequent coverage of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 2004, Meade took out the title of Sexiest Newscaster in a Playboy poll—earning 40% of the vote.

What A World
Meade, who was hailed in 2020 as one of the most stable things going on in TV news, has been a stalwart in the US news media.
Recently celebrating 20 years with HLN, she has credited her fans and viewers with the longevity of her career.
Speaking of her career highlights, she mentions skydiving with former US president George H.W. Bush.
With her infectious laugh and down-to-earth nature, Meade’s skill lies in appealing to a broad range—and understanding her viewers. “When I was coming up in the ranks, I wanted (success) so badly. If a consultant said, ‘Your laugh is a bit much,’ I wouldn’t laugh.”
Since then, Robin has realized that she’s not perfect.
Sometimes, she can’t help but laugh on air. But she has learned to accept that, just as her viewers have. As she often acknowledges, if there were no viewers: “We’d all be fired. There are no illusions about that!”
