He was born on September 30, 1975, to Cheryl Waters and William Paul Coates.
His mother was a teacher, while his father was a Vietnam veteran who worked for years as a research librarian at historically black Howard University, Washington.
Ta-Nehisi was a fan of the comic series Dungeons & Dragons when he was a child.
He went to Woodlawn High School in Baltimore. After high school, he studied journalism at Howard University for 5 years, but he left without a degree.
His first journalism job was as a reporter at The Washington City Paper.
In 2008, Ta-Nehisi became a blogger for The Atlantic. His first article for The Atlantic was about conservatism and Bill Cosby.
Also in 2008, Coates released his first book, a memoir – ”The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood.”
In 2015 he received a “Genius Grant” from the MacArthur Foundation.
In 2015, Coates released another book, titled – ”Between the World and Me.” It takes the form of a book-length letter from the author to his son. The book was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction and won the National Book Award for nonfiction.
In 2016, ”Between the World and Me” was ranked seventh on The Guardian’s list of the 100 best books of the 21st century.
Ta-Nehisi was made a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Oregon State University in 2016.
He joined the faculty of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute as a Distinguished Writer in Residence in 2017.
On October 3, 2017, he published a collection of essays that Coates originally wrote for The Atlantic magazine between 2008 and 2016, called – ”We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy.”
In July 2018, Ta-Nehisi left his position as a national correspondent for The Atlantic.

In September 2019, Coates published his first novel, entitled – ”The Water Dancer.” The novel is about a slave with a photographic memory who helps the Underground Railroad. It debuted at #1 on The New York Times fiction best-seller list.
