If you live in the USA, you will almost certainly know who Sam Elliott is.

Even if you don’t, chances are you’ll still know this legend, or at the very least, his soothing, calming, masculine voice.

Samuel Pack Elliott was born back in 1944, on the 9th of August.

He is a very well-known US actor who has been the recipient of numerous accolades over the course of his close to 6 decade-long career.

He has received a National Board of Review Award, along with being nominated for two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Awards, and much more besides.

Sam, who is now close to 80 years of age, is well known for his deep, yet calming and masculine voice, his tall and slender physique, and of course, for his mustache.

Sam is perhaps best known for appearing in movies and TV shows from the Western genre.

He started his career in the late 1960s, appearing in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, as well as The Way West, Mission Impossible (the TV show), and Gunsmoke.

We couldn’t possibly list each of his film and TV appearances as we’d be here all day, but what we can do is go over some of his most prominent roles and moments that have defined a career spanning more than half a century.

Westerns

As Sam appeared in more and more TV shows and movies, he started to get more and more offers, and began turning heads.

Audiences appreciated his work, and directors tried getting him for their projects.

He really began getting noticed when he played an abusive wife-killer in Murder in Texas, back in 1981.

Elliott appeared alongside the legendary Farrah Fawcett, as well as Katharine Ross, who would later become his future wife.

He really started to hone his craft and committed to each role he took. He appeared in shows such as Hawaii Five-O and the TV movie Buffalo Girls, where he played Wild Bill Hickock.

In 1987 he appeared in the made-for-television western The Quick and the Dead, along with Conagher in 1991, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

In 1993 however, he landed arguably his biggest role yet, when he played Virgil Earp in the critically acclaimed western Tombstone, which also starred Kurt Russell.

By the late 90s, he was a huge star and even appeared as The Stranger in the 1998 hit The Big Lebowski.

In 2002 he appeared alongside Mel Gibson in We Were Soldiers.

A Quiet Decade

Sam’s career arguably peaked in the early 2000s, as, although he continued to work, his roles were less dramatic, and the movies and shows he appeared in performed less well as they had done a decade or more prior.

He did, however, appear in The Golden Compass, before showing his comedic side on three episodes of Parks and Recreation.

Because his voice is so soothing, yet powerful, he also provided voice work on the animated movie Marmaduke.

Getting Back in The Saddle

After having a somewhat quiet 10 years or so (by his standards), Elliott, who was now in his 70s, appeared in The Hero in 2017, where he played an aging Western legend who is past his prime.

This work landed him critical acclaim and helped secure him a role in A Star is Born, which starred Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

His performance as Bobby Maine earned him a National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor and heaps of critical acclaim.

He even secured his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Sam would also be announced as a mainstay on the hit animated comedy Family Guy, playing an exaggerated version of himself called Wild Wild West, the new mayor of Quahog.

His character is the cousin of Mayor West, played by the late Adam West.

In a role that was made for him, he played Shae Brennon in Paramount +’s miniseries 1883, which is a prequel to the hit modern western series Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner.

Elliott proved that age is just a number, as his most successful stint in Hollywood, came between 2015 and 2023.
