Ab-Soul (real name – Herbert Anthony Stevens IV) is an American rapper who is a co-founder of the group ”Black Hippy.”
Biography
He was born on February 23, 1987.
Herbert has been suffering from Stevens-Johnson syndrome since he was a child. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a disorder of the skin and mucous membranes.
”It hindered my vision and my skin configuration,” Ab-Soul said about Stevens-Johnson syndrome. He added: ”It definitely put a huge dent in my hoop dreams.”
He raps in The Book of Soul:
”I came into this hurtful Earth in perfect health
Caught Stevens-Johnson syndrome when I was 10 years old.”
He wrote his first verse at age 12.
In 2002, Ab-Soul recorded his first song.
In 2005, Stevens signed a contract with record label StreetBeat Entertainment.
In 2007, Herbert signed to independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment.
In 2009, Ab-Soul formed the Black Hippy crew with Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and ScHoolboy Q.
On April 5, 2011, he released his debut album, titled – ”Longterm Mentality,” via Top Dawg Entertainment. It features guest appearances from:

On May 11, 2012, Stevens released his 2nd album, called – ”Control System,” via TDE. It features guest appearances from Alori Joh, Jhené Aiko, Ashtrobot, Danny Brown, Punch, Schoolboy Q, JaVonte, Kendrick Lamar, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Jay Rock.
On June 24, 2014, he released another album, entitled – ”These Days…” via Top Dawg Entertainment. It was produced by Tae Beast, Sounwave, and by Digi+Phonics’ Dave Free. ”The recording process was very fun, of course,” Herbert said about the album. He added: ”I recorded the majority of it at Mac Miller’s house.”
The album peaked at #2 on US Top Rap Albums and #2 on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
”These Days…” features guest appearances from Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, ScHoolboy Q, Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross, and Jay Rock. After the release of this album, he embarked on a national concert tour.

On December 9, 2016, Stevens released his 4th album – ”Do What Thou Wilt.” via TDE. It featured guest appearances from Rapsody, Mac Miller, SZA, Punch, JaVonté, Teedra Moses, Schoolboy Q, BR3, Kokane, Dash, Bas, and Zacari. The album reached number 9 on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
In March 2020, he appeared on “One Way St.” from Jhené Aiko’s new album Chilombo.
Wife/Girlfriend
In 2012, Ab-Soul’s girlfriend, Alori Joh (born Loriana Johnson), died tragically after she committed suicide by leaping from a radio tower.
Alori Joh was a singer who was affiliated with TDE and appeared on Ab-Soul’s debut studio album ”Longterm Mentality” as well on ”Control System.”
”It’s a very difficult thing to get over,” he said in a June 2012 interview with HipHopDX. Stevens also said: ”She was one of my biggest supporters.”
Later, he wrote a song about Joh called Book Of Soul. In the song, Ab-Soul raps:

Starting in 2013, Ab-Soul has been dating Yaris Sanchez, a Dominican influencer, actress, and model, who has over 430k followers on Instagram.

Sanchez has also appeared in music videos for Fabolous, Big Sean, and Nicki Minaj.
