But first…

Who is Gino Jennings?

Readers who find themselves asking, “who is Darlene Gayman Jennings?” have usually found their way to Darlene Gayman Jennings’ bio through her husband.

Because let’s face it, he’s the famous one.

Gino Jennings rose to mainstream prominence as an American pastor.

He is the founder of the First Church of our Lord Jesus Christ in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and also presides over the church’s satellite sites across the United States.

When Gino is not preaching for his congregation or courting the media, he is on tour across the globe to share the word of God as he interprets it.

He is often accompanied by his family and the upper echelons of his church when he travels overseas to conduct baptisms.

Gino Jennings was born on February 10, 1963, in Philadelphia, as the 4th of 8 children to Bishop Ernest Jennings and Mother Jennings.

He found his feet as an evangelist and clergy leader in his great-uncle’s church.

While pastors traditionally are required to hold a Doctor of Pastoral Theology degree or similar, and have spent time in seminary, Jennings has neither. He notes that he “will never get paid to preach” in a 2019 interview with DJ Kool.

The Origin Story Of Darlene Gayman Jennings

Darlene Jennings—who was born Darlene Gayman in rural Pennsylvania—was born in November of 1962.

She joined the First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ—which was known at that time as the First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostles’ Faith—in late 1985.

At that time, the congregation would meet in the basement of Gino Jennings’ father’s house.

Gino Jennings spoke to his father, Bishop Ernest Jennings, and to Darlene’s parents about his intentions for her.

The pair courted briefly before they got married on April 15, 1989.

The ceremony was small, and attended by the First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ community and worshipers.

It was performed by Bishop Jennings and was considered a very big deal at the time.

For some, according to spokespeople for The Truth of God website—the digital home of the church—it was the first holy wedding they had attended.

Back to Business

While April 15, 1989, was a big cause for celebration for the church—and the happy newlyweds—there was a lot on the go at the time.

The start of April saw the church’s headquarters moved from Gino’s dad’s basement to an Episcopalian fellowship hall on Briar Road in Philly.

The space was large, and able to accommodate the congregation’s equipment, musical instruments, and growing number of people.

With work to be done and a congregation to care for, Darlene Gayman—now Sister Darlene Jennings—and her husband were straight back to business.

On the night of his wedding, Gino Jennings was preaching on the pulpit of his new church headquarters.

Darlene, who threw herself into all aspects of her community, often worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep people fed, serve her community, and engage in fellowship opportunities with the congregation.

The Expansion of an Empire

The dawn of 1990 brought new opportunities for Sister Darlene and her husband, too.

A steady influx of new members joined the church, putting pressure on their now limited space.

At the same time, Darlene Jennings’ husband wanted to launch a church broadcast.

The Truth of God Radio

With the support of Sister Darlene, her husband launched the Gospel, according to Gino Jennings, in a regular Truth of God Radio Program.

While the show was a marginal success, churchgoers were faced with a setback when their headquarters were broken into and the broadcasting equipment stolen.

While the church reeled from the violation, Sister Darlene learned that another member of their church—Sister Snyder from Washington, D.C.—had lost her life.

The church worked tirelessly to find a home for their new radio broadcast.

Eventually, Gino Jennings secured a half-hour international broadcast through the Nashville, Tennessee station WWCR.

Through the New Jersey station WTMR, he was able to lock in another one-hour spot.

The Good Lord Giveth…

Throughout these years of hard work and sacrifice to grow the church into the vision that Darlene Jennings and her husband, Gino, had in their hearts, were the arrivals of many blessings of their own.

Seven blessings, in fact.

From 1990 to 2000, Gino Jennings and his wife Darlene welcomed seven children into the world—four sons and three daughters.

Pastor Gino and Darlene Jennings are the proud parents of Terron, Gino, Jordan, Cameron, Brittni, Ceara, and Persia Jennings.

All seven of Darlene Gayman Jennings’ children work closely alongside her and their father within the church.

Darlene’s husband has been vocal about how his children should be treated with the same rules as anyone else in his church.

“My children aren’t better than yours [or] higher than yours. [They] have got to walk by the same rule, the same guidelines, and if they don’t, they will be reprimanded just like yours.”

The Good Lord Taketh Away

Sadly, in the midst of all the acts of service being done and the children being welcomed into the Jennings family’s world, they suffered a great loss to their congregation and their inner circle.

In the early hours of April 12, 1991, Bishop Ernest Jennings—father of Pastor Gino and wife of church matriarch Mother Jennings—passed away suddenly.

The deaths of several other long-term members of the congregation followed, making the time especially difficult for Sister Darlene.

Sis Darlene Jennings is a Gem, and such a strong woman. Her life speaks for her. And their children are a testament to his teachings, preaching & as our guide. I enjoy the stories from the podium about her, the children & his family. The children remind me of her, & when I met one son named after him Gino he was so calm & cool, with the character of his Mother (not thinking more of himself because of his name or his relatives). My story is, I asked a young sister “go get the guy who will direct our senior choir” so I will know what song we will sing. This young man walked over I said “who R U write your name down”. On one of the songs sheets I was told we might sing in NC, wrote “Brother Gino” I didn’t think fast enough because I didn’t know all the names of the children. I said “wait a minute U have the same name as our Pastor you R kidding me” (by the way I am a senior) he just smiled and added (I’m his son) never would have known. Like their Mother U never would know. So I mentioned a sister i said we’d offered prayers for in a car accident. He called her over & said she’s here, gentility showed, the calming spirit about was evident. Quite impressive I was so happy to have met them & to be n their presence. Like Mother like Father? Spirited teaching of a household shining through. I have been blessed to visit more than 5 of our First Church Temples, in the US Headquarters, even Africa the Spirit of the Lord right there, with everything done decent and in order! Continued prayers for The First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the US & around the world. Stay safe & stay blessed. Our leader teacher & guide Pastor Gino Jennings & all those Pastors, ministers, teams, our Church Families & others that labor under his leadership. God bless you all!
