Karen was born November 8, 1984, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to an American-Haitian family.

As a child, she was introverted and referred to her younger self as ‘socially awkward.’

Since she didn’t spend much of her time socializing, she began learning about the digital world.

While digital technology was in its infant stage during her adolescent years, she learned enough to build a fan website focused on news about her favorite actor J.D. Williams and the boy band, The Backstreet Boys.

Her website performed so well that she won her first talent award and was invited to have a private meet-and-greet with the band.

Karen attended Elizabeth High School, and upon graduating, she went on to enroll at Union County College. 

She decided that postsecondary education was not for her, so she dropped out to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Karen’s first professional job was in 2002 when she worked as an assistant at the Hot 97 radio station with the well-known DJ Funkmaster Flex.

While employed there, she also took on a side role working with the American hip hop band, The Diplomats.

They entrusted her skills to help them build an e-commerce platform to help further promote their brand. From this experience, Karen quickly learned there was a growing demand for specialized workers in the lucrative digital industry.

After a few years working with DJ Funkmaster Flex, she moved on to accept a job with Asylum Records, a record label company under the massive Warner Brothers Group.

In 2008, Karen decided to work on another website.

She launched karencivil.com, which produces news for the hip-hop scene, and it quickly became a hit among hip hop fans.

Not too long after, she found her first business, Always Civil Enterprise, a marketing agency specializing in digital strategy for the hip-hop industry.

Her name began circulating among entertainment circles, and hip-hop artists began seeking her services.

In 2010, Lil Wayne hired Karen to help him develop his website weezythanxyou.com. The website would allow the rapper to publicly advertise his thank-you letters to his fans while serving time at the Rikers Island jail complex.

In 2010, MTV News publicly praised her for her contributions to urban journalism, and in 2012, she made the list for Ebony’s Power 100.

In 2016, Lil Wayne would hire Karen to co-produce his song, Wale, making it her first experience in music production.

Following this project, she was hired by American superstar rapper Dr. Dre to work as his digital marketing manager for his Beats by Dre electronics company, spanning from 2011 to 2015.

This role garnered widespread attention and was quickly recognized for her ability to spearhead her way through a male-dominated industry with no specialized academic training.

In 2015, Karen branched off into authored writing and would self-author her first book titled “Be You and Live Civil: Tools for Unlocking Your Potential & Living Your Purpose,” a self-help book.

While she wrote her book, she traveled to Haiti to pursue an ambitious venture where she would build a school and playground, naming it “Live Civil School.”

In addition, she partnered with Lil Wayne and Andre Berto to coordinate a campaign focused on collecting apparel and book donations for 500 attending students. The project was a success, and the school is still operating today.

When she wrapped up her book tour in 2016, she took on the role of Associate Producer on the documentary film “The Last Ride: A Philadelphia Story.”

In April 2017, she expanded her entrepreneurial initiatives and opened the Live Civil Computer Lab within the House of Hope orphanage in Haiti, equipped with 20 computers.

While she worked on this initiative, she collaborated with her rapper friend Nipsey Hussle to launch his clothing store, “The Marathon Clothing,” an urban clothing store specializing in bold print T-shirts.  

That same year, Karen was contacted by shoe company K-Swiss to help them launch their up-and-coming campaign titled “We Are the Best.” She took on the role, and in August 2017, the shoe line “K-Swiss X Karen Civilwas released, which featured Karen in their advertising campaigns modeling the shoes.

On May 9, 2018, Karen starred in her first feature role for the series “Good Looking Out” The premise of the series was to bring on serial entrepreneurs to offer their raw advice to young aspiring entrepreneurs. The six-episode series was aired on Complex Networks and was a hit with young viewers.

Her success in the hip-hop industry had the media comparing her to Oprah Winfrey, and she was titled Social Influencer of the Year by the black-owned multimedia company Black Enterprise.
