She added: “I think we’re living right now in the day and age of the disintermediation of the middleman, so there’s this disruption in a way back to simplicity where you speak to your customer directly.”
Professional Career
Nonoo’s fashion career had modest roots.
After relocating to New York, she began work at a small tailor’s in the Garment District of New York City.
Nonoo’s first job was different from her later career path in that she was working on primarily menswear, while her ultimate focus would be on womenswear. She later stated that she saw it as an opportunity to learn as much as she could while she was working under the head designer of the company.
Misha commented that she learned several tricks of the trade while working in the Garment District.
These included sourcing fabrics, production, and patternmaking.

While working there, Nonoo also began to hone her skills in womenswear design; she designed and manufactured a number of coats and jackets for her own personal use.
One such jacket would lead Nonoo to the next step in her career. While wearing it, she was approached by a senior buyer at the fashion company Intermix who was impressed with her sartorial skills.
Nonoo attended a meeting with other items from her personal collection, and Intermix soon placed a large order with Nonoo.
Nonoo, who had no background in finance, turned to her father for assistance.
The two of them figured out how to incorporate the production of the garments into her busy schedule at the tailoring company, and Nonoo’s personal fashion label was born.
Misha rapidly became a well-known name in the New York fashion scene.
She quickly debuted on a number of ‘people to watch’ lists and became renowned for being the first designer to debut a collection on Instagram (rather than through more traditional channels).

Nonoo was catapulted to further fame when Meghan Markle, wife to Prince Harry, was spotted wearing items from Nonoo’s line.
Markle is reportedly close to Nonoo, and it is rumored that the latter was responsible for setting Markle up on a blind date with Prince Harry.
They first met at an event in Miami in 2010. “We sat down, and we started, actually, right from the get-go,” she recalled.
Husband
Misha Nonoo married the British venture capitalist and auctioneer Alexander Gilkes in a lavish ceremony in Venice, Italy in 2012. The singer Lana Del Rey performed at the wedding.

Nonoo and Gilkes divorced in 2016, with sources close to the couple stating that their relationship was “a casualty of their ambition.”
Misha Nonoo remarried in September 2019. Her new husband was Michael Hess, heir to the Hess Oil fortune. Their wedding was held in Rome, with Jason Derulo and Paul McCartney performing at the ceremony.
