Osmel Sousa, nicknamed “The Tsar of Beauty,” is a beauty pageant entrepreneur and has a net worth of $25 million. He was born on September 26, 1946, in Cienfuegos, Cuba, as Osmel Ricardo Sousa Mansilla.
At age 13, his family sent him to live with his grandmother in Venezuela.
”I had non-male gestures, and I think that’s why they sent me to Venezuela,” Osmel explained in a later interview. He added: ”They put me on hormone treatment and all they did was ruin my voice.”
In 1969, Osmel started to work with the Venezuelan Committee of Beauty.
In 1981, he was appointed director of the Miss Venezuela pageant. ”I say that inner beauty doesn’t exist,” Sousa once said. He continued: ”That’s something that unpretty women invented to justify themselves.”
Sousa became the franchise manager for Mister World for Venezuela in 1996.
In 2007, Osmel joined the judging panel of Univision’s Hispanic beauty contest ”Nuestra Belleza Latina.” He was accompanied by a former Miss Universe, Lupita Jones.
Retirement
On February 6, 2018, he made a shocking revelation when he announced he was quitting Miss Venezuela.
”Today, I’ve decided to leave the presidency of the Miss Venezuela Organization through the big door, the same door that I came through almost 40 years ago by the hand of my great friend Gustavo Cisneros,” Sousa wrote on his Instagram.
He was succeeded by Gabriela Isler (Miss Universe in 2013) as a national director for Venezuela.
On April 9, 2019, Osmel started his self-entitled YouTube channel (Osmel Sousa TV). At the time of writing, it has over 93k subscribers.
In July 2019, it was announced that Osmel will be the director of the beauty contests of Miss Uruguay and Miss Argentina.
In 2021, Osmel confirmed his resignation as Miss Universe Argentina National Director.
In March 2024, it was reported that the “Czar of Beauty” will join the Miss Universe team.

In 2018, Sousa was accused of pimping out pageant contestants. He has denied the allegations.
Debora Menicucci, a Venezuelan actress and the winner of the Miss Venezuela World 2014, said for the New York Times that Sousa introduced her to her future husband, Maikel Moreno (a judge who currently serves as president of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice of Venezuela), 25 years her senior.
He studied with Horacio Peterson’s acting company with Luis Abreu, Miguel Ángel Landa, and Lupita Ferrer.
