What is Snoop Dogg’s net worth? Who is Snoop Dogg’s wife?
Introduction
Snoop Dogg (real name: Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.) is an American actor and rapper. He is best known for his extensive discography and multiple global hits from the mid-1990s to the present day.
The Origin Story
Broadus was born in Long Beach, California to parents and Vernell Varnado.
Varnado, Broadus’ biological father, abandoned the family when Broadus Jr. was only three months old; he is therefore named for his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr.
His stage name derives from his mother’s nicknaming of him as “Snoopy” due to his resemblance to the cartoon dog of Peanuts fame.
Broadus is the second of three siblings.
He was interested in entertainment from a young age, singing and playing piano at his local church.
In order to help his mother make ends meet, Broadus also took on a variety of menial jobs (such as bagging groceries, selling candy, and acting as a paperboy).
As a teenager, Broadus became involved in gang activity and spent many years in and out of jail for his involvement in drug dealing and gangland activities.
At the same time, he developed an interest in rap and began to draw crowds in school with his rhymes.
He began to pen raps alongside cousins Lil ½ Dead and Nate Dogg. The three cousins also became friends with Warren G around this time.
A recording of one of Broadus’ freestyles made it to the desk of the acclaimed producer, Dr. Dre.
Dre was immediately impressed by what he heard, and he contacted Broadus and offered him an audition for his recording label (Future Shock, later known as Death Row Records).
Professional Career
Broadus adopted the stage name of Snoop Doggy Dogg upon signing with Future Shock.
He collaborated with Dre upon the theme song for the 1992 police thriller Deep Cover, and also featured on Dre’s debut album, The Chronic. Broadus then released his debut album, entitled Doggystyle.
Doggystyle was, in part, due to the public exposure Broadus had received along with Dre, a huge commercial and critical success.
The singles Who Am I (What’s My Name) and Gin and Juice were huge successes, both hitting the top ten most played songs in the US. Doggystyle itself stayed in the Billboard Top 100 for several months – a huge achievement for a rap record at the time.
Broadus began to distance himself from the so-called “gangsta life” in 1996 following his trial for murder in the first degree and the death of colleague and friend Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas.
After his acquittal, Broadus moved his wife and kennel of 20 pit bulls out of Los Angeles proper and into the nearby Claremont Hills, distancing himself physically and figuratively from his former life.
His music also softened over the coming years, and Broadus began to appear at more and more alternative (rather than pure rap or hip-hop) festivals.
During this time, Broadus cultivated friendships with alternative and nu-metal musicians such as Maynard James Keenan of Tool and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit.
Broadus also enjoyed success as an actor in the 2000s. He had a memorable turn opposite Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke in the 2001 drama Training Day, and he also appeared alongside Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in the 2004 police comedy Starsky & Hutch.
Broadus has continued his cultural dominance to the present day.
In 2007, he made history as the first artist to release a song as a ringtone before it was released as a single.
He also experimented with reggae in the early 2010s, temporarily ditching the “Snoop Dogg” moniker in favor of the name “Snoop Lion.” He also recorded songs with the likes of Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams.
Over the years, Broadus has also tried his hand at various other non-musical pursuits.
He has appeared in several video games, once provided commentary for a boxing match (with one pundit remarking that Broadus “won” the evening with his droll commentary throughout), has published his cookbook, and has even released his brand of wine.
As a huge lifelong fan of professional wrestling, Broadus has also made many appearances on various WWE shows, primarily as a non-wrestler.
On at least two occasions, however, Broadus has entered the ring as a performer, including an unscripted performance against wrestler ‘The Miz,’ which Broadus improvised after The Miz’s opponent was injured.
Wife
Snoop Dogg married his high school sweetheart, Shante Taylor, in 1997. The two divorced in 2004 but ultimately remarried in 2008. They have three children together.
Broadus’ children with Taylor are sons Cordé (born 1994) and Cordell (born 1997) and daughter Cori (born 1999). He also has a son from a brief relationship with Laurie Holmond, named Julian Corrie Broadus (born 1998).
In 2015, Broadus’ eldest son, Cordé, had a child with his girlfriend, making Broadus a grandfather.
Height
Snoop Dogg is 6 ft 3 in (1.93 m) tall.
