Scott earned a BFA in Painting and a BA in Communications at East Carolina University.
In 2000, he went to Italy to draw and paint.
In 2002, Avett opened an art gallery in Concord, North Carolina.

His mother is a teacher, while his father owns a welding business in Concord.
In the Avett Brothers, Seth sings and plays piano, drum kit, hi-hat, and guitar.
In January 2008, Seth Avett married Susan Kay Adkins. The two divorced in 2013.
On May 29, 2016, he married Jennifer Carpenter. Seth said in an interview: ”It feels very right, and it feels good to have the ring on my finger.”
A rep for the Avett Brothers stated: ”We can confirm Seth Avett and Jennifer Carpenter were married in North Carolina over Memorial Day weekend.”
Seth and Carpenter first met at a concert in 2009.
