On September 4, 2010, Tom started his YouTube channel TheSyndicateProject (now known as Syndicate).
Initially, Tom started to upload videos of him playing Call of Duty, with his commentary over the top – as a hobby and with limited success.
His father was skeptical about his new hobby at first, ordering him to get back to his studies.
”My dad, at first, said, ‘Waste of time. It’s a scam. Stop it. Concentrate on studying instead,’” Cassell told Eurogamer. He added: ”I told him it was a hobby, that I enjoyed it and to get off my back about it. He did, but he was still encouraging me to sack it in.”
After some time, his tutor at Clarendon Sixth Form College told him to put all his efforts into vlogging for a year.
”My college tutor suggested I should put all of my time and effort into it for 12 months and see where it went,” Tom said in an interview in 2017. ”Seven years later, and here we are. I just helped that same tutor open a new games development suite at the college.”
In September 2011, Cassell started his second channel – Life Of Tom (previously known as SyndicateCentral). On this channel, Tom usually uploads daily vlogs.
In August 2014, Tom started his Twitch channel, Syndicate.
In July 2016, Cassell became a defendant in a class-action lawsuit after promoting the gambling website CSGOLotto.com without disclosing a conflict of interest as a vice-president of the company. Trevor Martin (TmarTn) was the owner and president.
