Nashville, Tennessee, is a city synonymous with the music industry.
The great state of Tennessee itself has produced some amazing musicians over the decades, but Nashville, in particular, just seems to have something magical in the air when it comes to making music.
While we’ve seen amazing singers, including the legendary Dolly Parton, Kitty Wells, Billy Ray Cyrus, Pat Boone, and many more Nashville residents rise to fame over the years, one native slowly climbing the ranks and growing in popularity day by day is Jelly Roll, AKA Jason Bradley DeFord.
Jelly Roll may be relatively new on the scene, but this multi-genre singer is already a three-time CMT Music Awards winner and is one of the hottest acts in music right now.

He grew up in poverty, and his mother struggled with severe mental health and addiction issues, which had a knock-on effect on his behavior.
He was regularly in trouble at school and with the law as a child and was often arrested for marijuana use and possession.
He was also arrested at age 14 for attempted robbery after he tried to steal marijuana.
As he grew older, however, he discovered a passion for music, which led him away from a life of petty crime.
He has his mother to thank for his nickname
While many believe that DeFord adopted the nickname Jelly Roll as he grew older and had already established himself as a musician, and because he is a fairly large dude, it actually goes back way further.
DeFord has struggled with his weight his entire life and was actually called Jelly Roll by his mother.
This is said to be because he was much larger and heavier than other kids his age, and the nickname just stuck.
Now, whether she meant it humorously because he was a chubby kid or whether it was intended maliciously is another story entirely.
One thing that is certain, however, is the fact that the nickname has helped him establish himself as a country-rap-hip hop artist.
He got a cease-and-desist letter from Waffle House
Whereas now he’s famous Waffle House would likely have changed their tune, back in 2013, they actually sent him a cease-and-desist letter. The reason? A mixtape.
In 2013, he would use the Waffle House logo and name on his ‘Whiskey, Weed, and Waffle House mixtape.
Jelly Roll is a fan of the outlet, with his favorite order said to be scrambled eggs, cheese, wheat toast, hashbrown, sausage, and a choc chip waffle.

DeFord, by his own admission, has faced his fair share of demons over the years.
Not only was he arrested for possession of drugs and attempted robbery, but he was also arrested for possession with intent.
He was in and out of jail when he was younger and even learned of his daughter’s birth while locked up.
By his own admission, he suffered from substance abuse and would regularly drink, use cocaine, take Xanax, and even cough syrup. He has suffered from severe anxiety, likely exasperated by his use of substances.
He did, however, gain his G.E.D. aged 23 while in jail, and has now managed to turn his life around.
