Will Packer is an American film producer who has produced or executive produced many films, including Almost Christmas, The Photograph, Night School, Straight Outta Compton, and Battle of the Year.
He was born on April 11, 1974, in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA.
In 1991, Will graduated from St. Petersburg High School.
In 1994, Packer and Rob Hardy founded Rainforest Films, a film production company. In the same year, they produced their first film, Chocolate City. Will said in an interview with Metro about the film:
”While I was in college I made a small independent feature. We had no idea what we were doing.”
Packer went on to say:
”No money. No resources. But we actually made a film that wasn’t half-bad.”
In 1996, Will earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Florida A&M University.
In 2007, Variety named him one of 10 Producers To Watch.
In 2010, Packer was the producer of ”Takers,” an action thriller film about a group of professional bank robbers who specialize in spectacular robberies. It grossed more than $69 million worldwide. The film stars Zoe Saldana, Matt Dillon, Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Chris Brown, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Michael Ealy, Jay Hernandez, and Idris Elba.
In 2013, Will started Will Packer Productions. Also in 2013, Packer signed a three-year “first-look” deal with Universal Pictures.
In 2014, Rob Hardy and Will announced that Rainforest Films was being dissolved.
In 2015, he served as the executive producer of ”Straight Outta Compton,” a biographical drama film about the rise and fall of the gangsta rap group N.W.A. The film grossed more than $201 million worldwide. In the film, Paul Giamatti stars as N.W.A’s manager Jerry Heller, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube.
In 2017, he launched Will Packer Media in partnership with Universal Pictures and Discovery Communications.
Will Packer Media bought xoNecole (the leading lifestyle platform for millennial women of color) in 2018.
In 2019, Packer produced What Men Want, a romantic comedy film that follows a woman who gains the ability to hear men’s inner thoughts. The screenplay was written by Tina Gordon Chism and Jas Waters. The film grossed more than $72 million worldwide. It stars Tracy Morgan, Taraji P. Henson, Richard Round, Erykah Badu, Josh Brener, and Aldis Hodge.
”What Men Want” was directed by Adam Shankman. Packer said about Shankman in an interview:
”The way that Adam Shankman – who’s doing a terrific job – is directing this movie falls right into Taraji’s sweet spot.”
Will later added:
”She’s so good at physical comedy, at comedy that is at the same time big but also emotional. She’s got depth.”
In 2019, Packer was the producer of ”Jacob’s Ladder,” a psychological horror film in which stars Guy Burnet, Michael Ealy, Karla Souza, Nicole Beharie, and Jesse Williams.
In 2020, Will acted as the producer of ”The Photograph,” a romantic drama film that follows a famous photographer who falls in love with a journalist. The film grossed over $20 million worldwide.
In July 2001, Will married Nina Packer, the director of operations for Blueprint Group. The two divorced in February 2009. Packer said about Nina in a later interview: ”My first wife is a good person, she wasn’t for me and I wasn’t for her.”
On August 28, 2015, Will Packer married Heather Hayslett. He first met Heather on a boat ride in 2009.
In 2013, Will proposed to Hayslett live on stage at the Essence Music Festival in front of several thousand witnesses.
