Who is Jeff Hornacek?

Jeff Hornacek, the father of Abby Hornacek, is a former professional basketball player for the NBA and currently works as an NBA coaching consultant for the Utah Jazz.

Jeff is a very valuable asset for the Utah Jazz and has enjoyed great success as a coach in the past.

He was the head coach for the Phoenix Suns from 2013 – 2016 and then the New York Knicks from 2016 – 2018.

On top of that, he’s also worked as a coaching assistant for the Houston Rockets.

As a pro, Jeff would play as a shooting back in the NBA from 1986 until the year 2000.

He began his playing career in 1986 and was the 22nd pick in the 2nd round of the NBA draft for 1986.

The draft pick that was used for him was traded on three separate occasions before it eventually ended up with the Phoenix Suns.

He would lead the team in scoring an average of 20.1 points per game and even earning an All-Star appearance. In 1991, Jeff would win the honor of NBA Player of the Month.

He would later be traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, along with Charles Barkley. He would play as a point guard and was considered a flop, subsequently being traded to the Utah Jazz.

Here, he would prove a huge success, setting records at the time for 11 consecutive 3-pointers. He was considered to be one of the best free-throw shooters in the NBA.

After enjoying great success at Utah, Jeff would retire in 2000, having enjoyed a 14-year playing career that spanned 1,077 games played in total.

In 2008, Jeff was hired as a coaching assistant.

He wanted to put off coaching until his children were older, as he didn’t want to miss them growing up or put pressure on them due to the travel that goes with coaching.

In 2013, he was named as head coach of the Phoenix Suns. He would win Coach of the Month in December, becoming the first person ever to win NBA Player of the Month and Coach of the Month.

He would enjoy a decent amount of success with the Suns before being fired in 2016.

He joined the Knicks shortly afterwards, but due to backstage goings-on, politics, and trouble with the players, his stint at New York flopped, and he was fired in 2018.

He would join the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach in late 2020 before joining his beloved Utah Jazz in the same position.
