Backlash after his Kobe Bryant jokes

Following the death of Kobe Bryant in January 2020, Shaffir was dropped by his talent agency after he made some jokes about the LA Lakers legend.

“Kobe Bryant died 23 years too late today,” Shaffir wrote on Twitter. ”He got away with rape because all the Hollywood liberals who attack comedy enjoy rooting for the Lakers more than they dislike rape.”

”Maybe he wouldn’t have raped that chick in Denver if he’d stayed with the Hornets,” Shaffir wrote on Instagram.

”That’s just dark comedy,” he later apologized. He added: ”It ain’t for everybody, so I don’t post it for everybody. I post it for my followers who are into that kind of comedy.”

Note – in 2003, Kobe was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old hotel Colorado employee. 

His January 28 show at the NY Comedy Club was also canceled.

”He needed to know that there are consequences for just saying ridiculous s— that you’re not supposed to say when people die,” Joe Rogan said in an episode of his podcast.
