Biography

She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on October 2, 1949, as Anna-Lou Leibovitz.

Her mother was a dancer, while her father served as a US Airforce pilot.

“My mother was kind of a sophisticated bohemian,” Annie told Rolling Stone in October 2017. “My father was in the military to make a living.”

She went to Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Maryland.

In 1967, Leibovitz started out studying fine arts in San Francisco.

Annie started at Rolling Stone when she was still a student.

In 1973, Leibovitz was named chief photographer of Rolling Stone.

In 1977, Annie moved to New York after Rolling Stone moved to its national headquarters from San Francisco to “The Big Apple.”

“I was a pretty naive … young person,” Leibovitz told Jan Dalley in June 2020 in an interview for Financial Times. The renowned photographer added: “I’ve never really felt I’ve come to terms with NY.”

On December 8, 1980, Leibovitz photographed Yoko Ono and John Lennon as part of the promotional efforts surrounding their joint album. Lennon‍ was shot and killed five hours later. 

In 1983, she left Rolling Stone and began working for the entertainment magazine, Vanity Fair.

In 1998, Annie began to work regularly for Vogue.

In 1999, Leibovitz and novelist Susan Sontag published a book together called Women. In the book, Annie’s photographs and Susan’s essays correspond and intertwine in intimate dialogue. The two had a close romantic relationship. In 2009, Leibovitz said: “I want to be perfectly clear. I love Susan.”

In 2000, she was deemed a “Living Legend” by the Librarian of Congress.

In 2005, Leibovitz was the first woman to have a solo show at the National Portrait Gallery.

In 2006, Leibovitz released her book A Photographer’s Life. Also in 2007, Leibovitz was hired by the Walt Disney Company for a series of photographs featuring Hollywood stars.

In 2009, Annie was awarded the International Center of Photography’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2013, she was the recipient of the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication.

In 2015, Annie was the principal photographer for the 2016 Pirelli calendar — an annual limited edition “art item.” The calendar included Patti Smith, Serena Williams, and Amy Schumer.
