Accusations against Brett Kavanaugh
In the summer of 2018, Ford wrote a confidential letter to a senior Democratic lawmaker alleging that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when both were in high school in Bethesda, Maryland.
At the time, Kavanaugh was 17, while Ford was 15 years old.
In September 2018, Ford testified about her allegations during a Senate Judiciary Committee.
”I am here today not because I want to be,” Ford said during a Senate Judiciary Committee. ”I am terrified. I am here because I believe it is my civic duty to tell you what happened to me with Brett.”
Kavanaugh denied the allegation.
”This is a completely false allegation,” Kavanaugh said in a statement. ”I have never done anything like what the accuser describes – to her or to anyone. I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday.”
Since coming forward with the allegation, Christine became the target of vicious threats and harassment.
”In the 36 hours since her name became public, Dr. Ford has received a stunning amount of support from her community and from fellow citizens across our country,” Dr. Blasey’s lawyers said in a letter sent to committee chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley. ”At the same time, however, her worst fears have materialized.”
Two days after Christine went public with her claims, a GoFundMe account was started in her name to help her hire a security service and use other measures to protect herself against threats. Since coming forward, Christine said that she had moved several times. More than $600,000 was raised.
”With immense gratitude, I am closing this account to further contributions,” Ford wrote. She continued: ”All funds unused after completion of security expenditures will be donated to organizations that support trauma survivors.”
In October 2018, Brett Kavanaugh was sworn as the 114th Supreme Court justice in a private ceremony.
In November 2019, Ford accepted the Rodger Baldwin Courage Award from the ACLU of Southern California in Beverly Hills. ”When I came forward last September, I did not feel courageous. I was simply doing my duty as a citizen,” Christine said at the time.
Time named her one of the most 100 influential people in 2019.
On June 21, 2002, Christine Blasey Ford married mechanical engineer Russell Ford.
The two met through a dating website.
Russel worked for Advanced Engineering for Abbott Medical Optics in Milpitas as well as for Zosano Pharma.
Christine first told her husband that Brett Kavanaugh assaulted her in 2012.
”I remember her saying that her attacker’s name was Brett Kavanaugh, that he was a successful lawyer who had grown up in Christine’s home town, and that he was well-known in the Washington D.C. community,” Ford’s affidavit says.
