Introduction
Laura Stylez (real name: unknown) is an American radio presenter and disc jockey.
She is best known for her morning show ‘Ebro in the Morning,’ hosted on the radio station ‘Hot 97).
The Origin Story
Stylez was born on November 4th, 1980, in Los Angeles, California.
Her parents, who are both Guatemalans, immigrated to the United States in the 1970s.
Stylez has stated that she “grew up in a typical Latino household” and that she was forbidden by her father to speak “Spanglish” (a bastardized mix of English and Spanish).
He instead insisted that she speak either pure English or else pure Spanish – an approach that Stylez says greatly strengthened her Spanish.
As a young girl, Stylez listened to a lot of salsa and merengue music.
She also lived in a very cosmopolitan LA neighborhood, and later fondly recalled eating a wide variety of cuisines from around the world and being exposed to an eclectic variety of multicultural music.
This mélange of cultural influences would inform her later approach to radio broadcasting.
Stylez was given her nickname by a childhood friend who, impressed with her sense of fashion, took to calling her “Stylez.”

Career
Stylez briefly worked at a radio station in Los Angeles before, at the age of 19, she relocated to New York City.
She considered settling in Miami, Florida, before ultimately deciding that New York City was a better place to pursue her dream of becoming a radio personality.
Stylez had a difficult time when she first moved to New York City.
With nowhere to stay, she ended up moving between the houses and apartments of friends.
She also enrolled in City College to satisfy her father, who wasn’t happy with her decision to move to the other side of the country.
Stylez’s first job at a radio station in NYC was at Power 105. She did not work directly on the radio at the time, but made coffee and acted as a receptionist. During her time there, however, she learned how to operate radio equipment, and made some contacts that would later be of use to her.
Laura credited her big break on the radio with the rise of reggaeton music in the US.
She was able to leverage her fluency in Spanish into a DJ position on the radio station Calle 105.9.
Stylez was mentored at the time by fellow DJ ‘Casanova,’ who helped her understand Puerto Rican slang and put her in a position to better understand the intricacies of the reggaeton scene.
Stylez eventually left Calle 105.9 when it began to move more toward salsa and reggaeton, which Stylez stated she wasn’t particularly interested in. Due to her passion for hip-hop, she ended up at the station “Hot 97,” where she remains to this day.
